I generally like his movies. They are almost always entertaining. I think he was a better actor earlier in his career. Now he is a box office dynamo. Big name movies, with big time casts/directors where he doesn't need to put in the effort.

He is having a similar career path to that of Tom Cruise.

for the most part, fortunately...tom cruise at least abandons the accent attempts. he learned his lesson after "far & away" i suppose. his accent in "interview" was subtle, not forced...even though it also wasn't very good.

Yeah I think Gangs of New York and Catch me if you can were his best roles by far. He's ok in Django. Departed and Shutter Island sucked.

come on, "gangs of new york"? what was your favorite part of his performance? his off and on "irish" accent, or his inability to even pretend to look like a tough guy? there is one reason to see that movie, and it is solely for the performance of daniel day-lewis. other than that it's a huge mixed bag, and a lot of it is awful.

I believed him as the torchered son hellbent on revenge. I thought he played off DDL well.

I love that movie though. Maybe Im giving him too much credit.

No, you aren't. DiCaprio was fine in it, nothing crazy spectacular but his performance was fine. It was an above average film.

it's because of lewis's performance that blinds a lot of people to its mediocrity. it has a lot of potential but drowns itself in a banal love story that isn't credible, bloated sequences that don't push the story forward, and ancillary characters that aren't interesting.

setting up the story to be about the 5 points was promising but scorcese was past his prime to make an effective movie about it. it remains a very flawed film, but is almost redeemed by the character of bill the butcher.

yeah it's very rare that an american can pull off an accent and make it credible. i will say, i used to think don cheadle was british (i first noticed him in "oceans 11").

It's funny the discussion came up today. The movie was on at midnight last night. I find it to be pretty worthless but for the opening scene.

You, movie guy, first noticed Don Cheadle in Oceans 11?

Surprising. Would think you would have remembered Traffic

i didn't know who he was until i really took notice of him in "oceans 11". then i put it together he was in "boogie nights" and "traffic" but "boogie nights" was memorable for so many things, it's hard to keep it all sorted out. and after seeing him in "oceans 11" i thought he was doing an american accent for the other films til i saw him in an interview and realized he was american.

qbo, yeah, all of those you mentioned are good.

I really like Don Cheadle but, looking at his list of movies, he's been in a long line of pretty unremarkable films.

I first noticed him in Rebound: The Legend of Earl 'The Goat' Manigault. That wasn't too good either.

I'm a big Scorsese fan and Irish and I had no interest in watching Gangs of New York.

badrogue is gonna be so disappointed that this thread has blossomed into 3 pages, and not any of it is due to a discussion regarding "the wolf of wall street". i wish all film discourses went this way sometimes.

I'm sympathetic to those who say Gangs of NY was mediocre at best, but man I totally second everyone who has said DDL carried that movie. In fact one time I just used my DVR to play his scenes only. He was terrific.

I asked my partner why he didn't like The Wolf of Wall Street. He just kept saying it seemed like a joke. His favorite movie is Casino and he loves Goodfellas. He said he expected it to be like that but it wasn't. When I told him Jordan Belfort was a real guy, he said he didn't know that and now he hates the movie even more. I asked him to give me an example of why the movie was "like a joke" and he said, "Okay, when Leo and Jonah Hill hired the brokers for their new firm, they were all dorks in an unrealistic way, like they should have been newcasters in Anchorman instead of characters in a movie portraying real life."

WZ is spot on about Gangs. It's a pile of shit. And I wouldn't call what DDL does in that film good acting. He chews the fucking scenery, regurgitates the cud, and digests it all over again. Ham-fisted doesn't quite do justice to DDL's "acting" in Gangs.

I found it interesting that both badrogue and my partner had the same reaction to a movie that I don't believe has been universally panned. But now that I'm thinking about it, I'm not sure I've read any actual reviews of it.

How the execs at Universal thought it was a good idea to spend $200m on box office poison Keanu Reeves is beyond me.

I just heard some movie reviewer on the radio mention this movie as a best picture candidate. I'm going to go to an early movie and see it. I'll spend the 5 bucks....the differing opinions are very interesting.

So I saw this movie yesterday morning. I enjoyed it for what it was. This is not a great movie but it is funny and it is always interesting to see the excesses of some people.

Like Joe Orr "partner" said, it was kind of a joke. The characters really had no depth, even Belafort. They never really delved beyond the excesses. I want to know more about his right hand men. I want to know more about the industry despite them purposely glossing over it on two different occasions. Were clients generally satisfied with his services or was this just a band of sociopaths all looking to scam the middle class without remorse?

Great acting job by Meathead. I think he surprisingly stole every scene he was in even as a purely supporting actor.

I'd like to hear the reviews of people in the industry. I have heard enough stories to believe that the drug use, partying and personalities were fairly accurate but accentuated.
