How about the rate for an average QB who fits the system?

Does it really take 126 million dollars to find a QB to run this offense? The backup seemed to prove otherwise.

I haven't followed him closely since his initial year in Denver, but I think it's fair to say he's a level or two lower than the Cutler-Manning-Flacco-Big Ben blob.

The gap between him and Cutler isn't big. If I were a GM I would take a guy like that before overpaying for guys like Cutler.

you may be right, I don't follow Orton that much, but I think if Orton were that capable, he would have found a starting job in the league by now. Regardless of our thoughts on Cutler's deal, I think haters and defenders alike would agree that he's at least a starting QB in this league. I think if the same were true of Orton, someone may have realized that by now. I do think he was dropped from starting jobs at least twice since leaving Chicago.

They're clearly banking on Trestman's potential to harness the physical talents of Cutler, which as we know exceeds that of McCown's, but hasn't translated into real word results as of yet. I happen to think the Bears generously rewarded their second-best QB of the 2013 season.

Did he though? If Trestman and Emery thought they could find any QB in the draft and mold him to what they need, don't you think they would do it? They don't owe Cutler any favors. They did this because this is what they want.

Assuming that theory is correct - are you essentially advocating a "rotating" QB position? Because McCown is getting a big bump from somebody (a bad team probably), and assuming another "back up" fills in again next year and does the same......

No way that's a successful plan.

Please keep in mind McCown entire NFL career. He's Flynn, Scott Mitchell, etc.

Do you think 5 games is a big enough sample size to make a determination like that? How much money has been flushed down toilets based on quarterback small sample sizes? The names Scott Mitchell, Rob Johnson, Matt Cassell and Matt Flynn immediately come to mind.

Cowboys gave him over $10M to sit on the bench the past couple of years.

Indicates he's a highly capable backup, but if he were starting material then I have to think teams would be dying to trade for him, or at least lining up to sign him when he becomes a FA.

Orton?
That's worth way more  than Romo's contract. Not because it's Orton but why anybody knowingly pays somebody that kind of money for a player you hope never sees the field is stupid.

Who is their GM?

They don't know who they will draft. They gambled on what they know. Depending on the language of the contract it could be a good gamble. They still could and should draft a QB. If they take one if the first round they will have him for 5 years.

Would Sam Bradford be considered an average QB?

In my world?? No. I haven't liked him......ever. He was WAY overpaid as a draft pick. And now he's more of an injury risk than Cutler.

Cutler $$ is way better than crap $$$ in STL.

I think any starter who has demonstrated elite skills from time to time is going to get a deal similar to Cutler's. It's not about the player, but more about the position. If I can't staff the QB position with a Rodgers or Brees, I'm going to pay for the next best thing.

I'm not even suggesting that they should have made McCown the starter. I'm saying if someone who is coaching high school football is brought in and can run this offense, wouldnt that tell you something? The answer is what Bumpkin said...better the devil you know than the one you don't Much easier just to resign Jay.

Bucky Chris wrote:

The better start drafting QB's anyway. This signing shouldn't change that. And why is Matt Flynn, Mitchell, Cassell and the likes being brought up? I'm talking about paying an average QB a smaller salary to run this offense. Those were all guys given stupid deals after moderate success. Sound familiar?

You're missing my point (or ignoring it). If bringing in an average QB to run the offense would give the Bears the desired results they want, why didn't they do it?

Perhaps Smith, Schaub, Fitzpatrick, Henne, etc. I think they are a notch below the Manning, Romo, Big Ben, Cutler class.

Good question, Chris.

Why did it take 20 years to get a decent QB? Why can't they draft better?

Because it's the Bears.

Thanks, Scorehead.

Where did you hear this?

Listen buddy I live out of the area and listen to the score all damn day. Do not question me!

I thought you were asking for opinion, I gave mine. I "think" he would have gotten more. But I have no proof of that. Unfortunately I do not have a friend who is a janitor for the Redskins and gives me inside info.

Are you saying Eli or Peyton Manning? Romo and Big Ben are not elite Qb's IMO.

Eli. I think there are only 3-4 elite QBs, but in this league as of now, the money second tier QBs like Cutler and Romo are paid is going to be disproportionate to their on-the-field results. That's just a dynamic we're going to have to get used to, or so it seems.
