The state's marijuana dispensaries raked in $1 million on the first day of legalization, as Coloradoans braved winter weather and hours-long lines to be the first Americans to buy legal recreational weed. Marijuana was on sale at 24 stores, most located in Denver, and regulators said the roll-out of the nation's first legal pot industry went smoothly.

Channel 9 News:

"It's a huge deal for me," said Andre Barr, a 34-year-old deliveryman who drove from Niles, Mich., to be part of the legal weed experiment. "This wait is nothing."

The world was watching as Colorado unveiled the modern world's first fully legal marijuana industry - no doctor's note required (as in 18 states and Washington, D.C.) and no unregulated production of the drug (as in the Netherlands). Uruguay has fully legalized pot but hasn't yet set up its system.

Colorado had 24 shops open Wednesday, most of them in Denver, and aside from long lines and sporadic reports of shoppers cited for smoking pot in public, there were few problems.

Naturally, not everyone is thrilled with legalization, 45 percent of Colorado voted against Amendment 64.

As skeptics watched in alarm, they warned that the celebratory vibe in Colorado masked "dangerous consequences."

"Wider marijuana availability, they say, would lead to greater illegal use by youth, and possibly more traffic accidents and addiction problems."

Marijuana Overdoses Kill 37 in Colorado On First Day of Legalization
January 2nd, 2014

According to a report in the Rocky Mountain News, 37 people were killed across the state on January 1st, the first day the drug became legal for all adults to purchase. Several more are clinging onto life in local emergency rooms and are not expected to survive.
"It's complete chaos here," says Dr. Jack Shepard, chief of surgery at St. Luke's Medical Center in Denver, "I've put five college students in body bags since breakfast and more are arriving every minute.
"We are seeing cardiac arrests, hypospadias, acquired trimethylaminuria and multiple organ failures. By next week the death toll could go as high as 200, maybe 300. Someone needs to step in and stop this madness. My god, why did we legalize marijuana? What were we thinking?"
Rainin' Fire in the Sky
Colorado and Washington state approved the sale of marijuana for recreational use in November though statewide ballot measures. Under the new policies pot is legal for adult use, regulated like alcohol and heavily taxed.
One of the principal arguments of legalization advocates was that cannabis has long been considered safer than alcohol and tobacco and was not thought not to cause overdose. But a brave minority tried to warn Coloradans of the drug's dangers.
"We told everyone this would happen," says Peter Swindon, President and CEO of local brewer MolsonCoors, "Marijuana is a deadly hardcore drug that causes addiction and destroys lives.
"When was the last time you heard of someone overdosing on beer? All these pro-marijuana groups should be ashamed of themselves. The victims' blood is on their hands."
One of the those victims was 29-year-old Jesse Bruce Pinkman, a former methamphetamine dealer from Albuquerque who had recently moved to Boulder to establish a legal marijuana dispensary.
Pinkman was partying with friends when he suffered several seizures and a massive heart attack which ultimately proved to be fatal. Toxicology reports revealed that marijuana was the only drug present in his system.
"This is just a terrible tragedy," says his friend Peter, "Jesse was trying to go legit and now this happens? I guess drugs really are as dangerous as they say."
Governor John Hickenlooper, who opposed the ballot initiative that legalized the drug, says he will call a special legislative session to try and overturn the new law.
"We can't sit idly by and allow this slaughter to continue," he says.

as opposed to legal use by youth? and blame the laws not the parents?

more traffic accidents??@?!?!??!?@#?@?#!@?#?!@? lolz, its like roundabouts- they claim that accidents actually go UP after they are installed, but deaths drop to virtually zero because everyone is driving so fucking slow.

addiction problems? show me one independent study that links marijuana to physical addiction.

yeah but i think the point was to get it cheaper legally then you can on the illegal market. but i suppose even if it goes to $300/oz the black market would just lower prices. trust me, the drug dealers have plenty of markup they can cut out... PLENTY.

so do the legal dispensaries. shit, even if you grow indoors and pay $300/month in electricity, you can get a pound from that every 3 months and make over $5k.

That kind of stereotyping is still rampant.

I watched 2 and a half men yesterday and they had this awful pot smoking scene with Kutcher.

They're sitting around a noticealby smoky garage eating cheetos, forgetting the meaning to words and lusting after Ice cream sandwiches

Are companies who operate in Colorado still able to drug test employees? Is pot acceptable now to employers who drug test?

RPB, I read on this very site that we don't know the long term effects of pot, so if 37 people died yesterday from pot, this is going to get scary. Only Jeebus can save us now.

of course they can. this is america, privacy invasion and discrimination are applauded.

some employers will likely get rid of marijuana testing, but still keep other drugs on the ticket. however, the only reason companies test for pot is for the insurance discounts- so dont think for a second that they do it for just causes. If they got a discount for slitting peoples throats legally they would do it without conscience.

Stereotypes save time. It's much easier to just lampoon something that one does not understand.

its amazing to me how bad marijuana is still projected in many minds.. but in those same minds somehow alcohol is perfectly ok. remember, its drugs AND alcohol, whatever that means.

That scenario about Kutcher is a mild one.

There are shows that have people smoking pot, and then they start hallucinating and seeing dinosaurs and shit. It's ridiculous.

even worse are the 'addiction' reality shows that portray pot users as junkies that are ruining all the lives around them.

Alcohol or weed makes me eat like a maniac. When my mind gets altered all I think about is eating copious amounts of food.

Saved by the Bell

i remember the word "pot" growing up. i was told it was horrible stuff and to be scared of it. i grew up, found out my parents used to do it. got confused. then i found out my parents still do it. got more confused. then i learned about all drugs, and realized pot wasnt even toxic. was very confused. now i do pot all the time, and the last thing i am with weed is confused.
