Why are you asking us? Do you really think any of us are certified to talk about fracking?

I'm mostly just waiting for Doug to opine - he's probably the best qualified - but I thought that some others would pool their knowledge as well.
Oh, so you don't require people to have certifications to respond any more?

I'm doing business in North Dakota with the fracking industry, so my view is biased. Plenty of info exists online about Fracking.

It doesn't.

We're all biased.

The fracking industry's nexus to Wisconsin is of the picks and shovels variety--there's really no frackable acreage in Wisco, but Wisconsin provides a lot
the sand needed by the fracking companies in other states. Fresh water is the other major input into the fracking process. Not sure where the North Dakota frackers get their water from. Probably local sources.

Couple of maps of the most frackable areas:

They are doing quite a bit of fracking in my part of Ohio. All I know is that its increasing property values because the workers its bringing in need to live somewhere. I also will not drink tap water from now until I move. I also plan to move the hell out of here by 3 years so I can sell high and not be around when its a toxic waste land. The worst part of it is that the wonderful state of ohio has leased the rights to some abandoned wells and OTHER STATES are bringing their brine and shit to dump in them.....with apparently little to no regulation.

Its been great for the construction industry and will likely lead to resource independence.

IDK they say it is fairly safe and they are being very careful not to kill their golden goose. Of course, all energy companies would say this or put out their PR. All I know is that in PA and I heard more in ND it is a fucking gold rush basically. Jobs, money and happiness for all.

They did. Its called hydrulic fracturing.
they've been doing this since just after WWII. Just now are we flipping out over it.

Bad, very dirty. Watch that HBO special on people all over the country lighting their water from their faucets on fire.

It was and is. There happens to be high concentrations of methane in some underground wells, it happens.

The problem is the unregulated dumping of the chemical brine used in the fracking process. Even though they have done this since WWII it wasn't even close to as wide spread as now. You could have dumped that shit in no mans land back then but now there is much more of it to dump.

Good point.

Aren't they companies just using abandoned wells to dump it?

Thats all I got.

Mr Buffet went out and bought himself a railroad right before this thing hit big, and wouldnt you know it, it does the majority of the hauling of fracking business as far as rails go.

It's about damned time these careless corporations face some jail time:

Exxon Mobil Corp. subsidiary XTO Energy will have to face criminal charges for allegedly dumping tens of thousands of gallons of hydraulic fracturing waste at a Marcellus Shale drilling site in 2010, according to a Pennsylvania judge’s ruling on Thursday.

Following a preliminary hearing, Magisterial District Judge James G. Carn decided that all eight charges against Exxon — including violations of both the state Clean Streams Law and the Solid Waste Management Act — will be “held for court,” meaning there is enough evidence to take the fossil fuel giant to trial over felony offenses.

Pennsylvania’s Attorney General filed criminal charges back in September, claiming Exxonhad removed a plug from a wastewater tank, leading to 57,000 gallons of contaminated water spilling into the soil. The Exxon subsidiary had contested the criminal charges, claiming there was “no lasting environmental impact,” and that the charges could “discourage good environmental practices” from guilty companies.

“The action tells oil and gas operators that setting up infrastructure to recycle produced water exposes them to the risk of significant legal and financial penalties should a small release occur,” Exxon said at the time.

Williston, North Dakota is basically a giant labor camp for America's scumbag males. All they do up there is work, drink, and rape.

the only part that really bothers me... well two things... i mean three... the chemicals they use and WILL NOT tell anyone what those chemicals are. They should be required by law to disclose that info.

second- fracking causes earthquakes. its not a mystery anymore, its happening. major earthquakes? no but the more fracking were doing, the more quakes are popping up.

third- fresh water. we dont have much of it left, and to use it just to squirt into the ground mixed with so many chemicals it cant be cleaned and reused... well thats just irresponsible.

the ground water being contaminated is another possible outcome. thing is, i dont think its as grave concern as those documentaries will tell you. im sure some groundwater is effected, but we drink water around 100ft down... and theyre fracking thousands of feet down... so really it should be well away from any drinking water. what happens when those chemicals leech up over decades is an entirely different story though....

people just like being red skinned republicans. no matter what. i dont get it, but they know what they know and any new information that doesnt fit their agenda is just wrong and stupid. the fact that most republicans are poor or low middle class just amazes me, because they vote for people who do everything they can to leech more money from them.

I don't know about you guys, but since I have started drinking water with 2-Butoxyethanol, I haven't looked back. I can't even drink water without it anymore.
