An investigative reporter for CBS 2 Chicago was charged with driving under the influence and endangering the lives of children after a minor accident outside a Naperville fast food restaurant early Saturday, police said.

Dave Savini, whose age was not released, was arrested shortly after 1:30 a.m. Saturday after fleeing the scene of the accident, Naperville Police Department Cmdr. Jason Arres said.

Police were alerted about 12:20 a.m. to an incident involving Savini and another driver in the parking lot of a Taco Bell in the 1200 block of Rickert Drive, Arres said.

Following a minor accident, the other driver attempted to photograph Savini's license plate, Arres said. Police believe Savini pushed the other driver and fled the scene in a vehicle with two children under 18 inside.

Police did not comment on whether the children were related to Savini.

Officers stopped Savini's vehicle near the intersection of Saratoga and Plainfield-Naperville roads, about 3.5 miles from the Taco Bell. He was charged with two counts of DUI, two counts of endangering the health or life a child, one count of battery and one count of leaving the scene of an accident with vehicle damage.

All of the charges are misdemeanors, and Savini was released on bond shortly after being taken into custody.

Efforts to reach Savini, who has been with CBS since 2004, were unsuccessful.

Tribune reporter Jonathan Bullington contributed.

I was thinking the same thing before reading your post. I think it is. Lets see how he likes investigators digging into his life.

CBS 2’s Savini charged with DUI

CBS-owned WBBM-Channel 2 was keeping mum Saturday on the arrest of veteran investigative reporter Dave Savini, who faces charges of hit-and-run, driving under the influence, battery and endangering the life of a child.

The Daily Herald reported that police in west suburban Naperville arrested Savini shortly after midnight Saturday after he was reported to have been involved in a traffic accident in the parking lot of a Taco Bell. The driver of the other vehicle said Savini pushed him when he took a photograph of Savini’s license plate, according to police.

The endangerment charge was filed because Savini, a Naperville resident and father of two, had two children under 18 in the car, the report said. He was released on $3,000 bond.

CBS 2 did not report the arrest on its website or on its 10 p.m. newscast Saturday.

Savini, 46, grew up on Chicago’s Northwest Side and began as a intern for WMAQ-Channel 5’s investigative unit in 1987. He rejoined the NBC-owned station in 1993 from WROC-TV in Rochester, N.Y. In 2004, he jumped to CBS 2.

Among his award-winning series was “Code Blue, Code Red,” which investigated law enforcement officials and exposed 250 drunk driving offenders among Chicago police officers, firefighters and paramedics in 2003.

But he’ll forever be remembered for “Hidden Hotel Horrors,” the 3½-minute sweeps piece he delivered in 1996 in which he pointed out “splotches of semen, vaginal fluid and blood” by showing an ultraviolet light passed over the bedding in three Chicago area hotel rooms.

Awesome.

There used to be a poster here that had Savini as his avatar.

It’s been more than a week since longtime Chicago investigative reporter Dave Savini was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, battery, child endangerment and leaving the scene of an accident in west suburban Naperville.

But CBS-owned WBBM-Channel 2, where Savini, 47, has been a prominent figure since 2004, hasn’t said a word about it on any of its newscasts or on its website. Nor has the station issued any statement since court documents showed Savini’s blood-alcohol level registered 0.134 after he failed field tests and admitting consuming alcohol in the early hours of Jan 4.

Marty Wilke
Over the weekend I reached out to Marty Wilke, president and general manager of CBS 2, to ask her to comment on the matter and to clarify Savini’s employment status while he awaits a Jan. 21 court date. I told her I believed the matter was serious enough to deserve a response from her personally. I’d always admired Wilke’s openness when she was general manager of Tribune Broadcasting WGN-Channel 9 before she joined CBS 2 in 2012 and totally clammed up.

I never heard back from her.

Instead I received the following email message from a spokeswoman for CBS 2: “At this time, we have declined all requests for comment and are referring all press inquiries to Dave’s attorney.” (Never mind that when the Chicago Tribune called Savini’s attorney, Terry Ekl, he refused to comment.)

It strikes me as the height of hypocrisy for a station that demands answers from everyone else not to respond to legitimate inquiries about one of its own employees.

Remember that the next time you see Savini, in all his self-righteous arrogance, chasing after some unwitting target who doesn’t want to talk to him. Or the next time CBS 2 makes a big deal about a minor celebrity who gets in trouble.

“Original Reporting” my ass.

That really is such a funny thing. I think about this most of the time regarding the score. They take so much joy judging everyone in sports for DUI or other silly minor things. Can you imagine the silence if an on aire Score person got pinched after that one too many glasses of wine?

This guy is a hero. Before him, I thought all hotels were pristine and no one had ever had sexual relations on any of the beds
