There are some guys on your team that are pretty far beyond mediocre. Zisk and Fernandez were really good players for awhile. Their careers were too short to be Hall of Fame caliber, but the quality of their work was certainly not lacking. Garr was like a poor man's Matty Alou and that man wasn't even that poor. Britt Burns looked like he might be anything. He came out of the box almost like Prior or Wood before he got hurt. Bere wasn't much different than that. And Contreras is one of the greatest pitchers of his generation along with Maddux, Johnson, Clemens, and Martinez. The only reason his big league numbers fail to stack up with that group is because he was denied an opportunity to compete in the U.S. by Fidel Castro. He's a modern day Satchel Paige.

I always like SP James Baldwin as a yute. Ray Durham as well, though he was usually better than mediocre.

I still remember the banner hanging over the outfield fence at Comiskey reading "Superstar Lamar" for Lamar Johnson.

Chet Lemon had a perfectly long and undistinguished career.

To illustrate how historically weak the Sox have been at center, he's in the conversation for the best they have ever had.

Its too bad Bere hurt his arm before he really had a chance to take off. 12-5, 12-2, first 2 years. Had great stuff.

I had a buddy who loved Dave Gallagher. He even bought one of those hitting stride things he developed. For years I had to hear about what a mistake the Sox made for getting rid of him. I never had the heart to tell him it was because he wasn't very good.

As a young 1st-baseman, I always rooted for the success of Jim Spencer.

That was before I moved to Chicago and learned I had to hate the White Sox to be a good Cub fan and vice-versa.
