For the last several years, my Mother has been imprisoned in the living hell of a rapidly advancing dementia which crippled both mind and body. By the grace of God, my beautiful Mother was freed from this prison early this afternoon and has gone to her eternal reward.

She was the best person I have ever known.

Well done Mom.

I dare not even begin to think how this eventuality will be worn by me .... I hope I'm half as strong as I reckon you will be.

That is a horrible, horrible disease and I am glad she is resting peacefully in that great big ballpark in the skiy. All the best to you and your family during the upcoming difficult days and months ahead.

Very sorry to hear, SR. At least it sounds like you know she is in a better place. I'm sorry your family and her had to suffer for so long.

Try to keep your chin up in the coming days

Thanks so very much to all of you.

Bryan, when you said you were sure she was very proud of me, I instantly wept. Nobody was more heartbroken than her about my excessive drinking and how it had thrown my life into chaos and shambles. It was her essentially telling me that I was no longer welcome around her that led me to believe that things could not get much worse, and it was time to shape up. This was fifteen (15) plus years ago, and I am alive now primarily because of what had to be an incredibly painful act of tough love on her part.

She always said she was proud of what I had overcome and become.

Are you going to send her to the big baseball diamond in the sky wearing a Phil Hughes jersey?

Laughter is the best medicine. This post has helped to heal me.

If I am ever in a coma, breathing, but not really alive, lean down to me and whisper" "How about that Alex Rodriguez in the 2012 playoff series against Detroit?" That will end my suffering.

What a terrible disease.
When you think about it, it is the only disease that is harder on the loved ones than on the afflicted person.
They sit around in a mindless stupor making new friends every day while the loved ones live in sorrow and regret.
My mother died from this awful affliction and it was horrible to watch as it progressed.
Your mother sounds like a very special soul who left you with fond memories.
Cherish them. She is definitely in a better place.

Beautifully-written tribute. My condolences.

Watching both my MIL and my BIL's father suffer dementia. A terrible disease.
