He wasn't being serious when he said he was eating 30 lbs. of meat each day. Wilt Chamberlain did it, but he's the exception and not the rule. People, in general, underestimate the dramatic changes you can make to your body if you eat cleanly and dedicate yourself in the gym. If that's all you have to do each day and you do it like it's your fucking job, a luxury professional athletes with access to personal chefs, nutritionists, and trainers have, you're going to be a large, muscular person.

Good pitchers tend to win more games than bad pitchers.

Maddux won 20 games for a 78-win Cub team. Should he have won 24 that year? Maybe.

But, over the course of a career, good pitchers are going to have lots and lots of wins.

I don't even think it works that way. The Cubs were only a bad team because Maddux couldn't pitch everyday.

Frank and I argued awhile back and he suggested that Maddux wouldn't have won as many games had he remained a Cub. That's just conjecture based mostly on emotion since over the course of his career the Cubs and Braves each had about an even share of high-scoring and low-scoring teams.

People were all over Frank for using non-union carpenters when he had his house built. However, a caller to Mac and Spiegs today, as well as many texters, said it is uncommon for union carpenters to be used in that situation.

Of course that's true, but it still seems disingenuous when you're a highly paid baseball player who goes on strike and acts as if you're really a part of organized labor. Players are pro-Union when it suits them. And ironically- or maybe not- their own Union is the reason every single one of them, including Frank Thomas, is under suspicion of using performance enhancing drugs.

Yeah, I agree, though it was funny how he (probably unintentionally) ripped Jeff Nelson. Though he singled him out as the pitcher who had his number, he also said something like Nelson couldn't touch anyone else.

Later in the show, in typical fashion, Bernstein was berating a caller who had the nerve to suggest Maddux was one of the best RHP of all time. Bernstein, always eager to put down the white athlete, was skeptical. The caller made the mistake of using wins as his first argument, to which DB reflexively launched into his "wins mean nothing, we've moved on from stats like ERA to more advanced metrics", etc.). So then DB suggests looking at WAR. Lo and behold, Greg Maddux was 4th all-time.

That clearly surprised Dan, who then said lifetime WAR was basically a compiler stat, and that pitchers like Pedro had much better "peak WAR" and he proceeded to read off some of Pedro's admittedly impressive seasonal WARs. So then he says he is going to list the top pitchers by 7-year peak WAR. Maddux is 10th (still elite), and I was waiting for Pedro's name...he was like 25th.
