He's pretty much right, but he kinda gets his facts wrong and it undermines his position on Sammy just a little but overall he's probably right.

His (understandable )jealousy of Sosa is evident here, too.

Newly elected Hall of Famer Frank Thomas joined Jim Rome for an interview that will air in this month’s Jim Rome on Showtime beginning Wednesday night. In it, Thomas touched on multiple aspects of steroids use in baseball, including both his own doubts about the integrity of some of his colleagues and his distaste for media members questioning whether he used.

“I knew it was shady when Sammy Sosa hit 60 home runs,” Thomas said.”Sammy Sosa was my teammate for three years coming up. So watching his career and watching him grow, for three years he was capable of only 20-25, 27 home runs at the most… there’s no way Sammy doubled me up. With Mark McGwire, you really had to take a look at it because Mark McGwire had 48 home runs as a rookie.”

Sosa hit only 35 home runs in 449 games in the minors, though he was often a bit young for his level. He hit 15 home runs in his rookie season as a 21-year-old in 1990, then averaged 34 home runs a year from 1993 to 1997 before exploding for 66 in 1998.

So Thomas’ version of history skips a step, for what it’s worth. Sosa came up struggling to make contact enough to hit many homers as a young player, but did show plenty of power between his rookie season and his consecutive 60-plus homer years in 1998 and 1999.

Later in the interview with Rome, Thomas added that he sometimes faces the same suspicion that plagues players of his era.

“I hate to bring up names,” Thomas said, “but Skip Bayless even said the other week, ‘How did I walk through the door without any suspicion?’ And I would like to have a conversation with him because I walked the walk and talked the talk from Day 1.”

He still could have done steroids.

Though it would be funny if someone made the Hall and THEN confessed.

You're a first ballot HoFer and Sammy might drop off the ballot soon, don't need to run up the score.

Thomas could have owned Chicago like Sammy did if he wasn't a total pud in the early/mid 90's.

Good for Big Frank. Rome should have asked him about Giambi and the 2000 MVP award.

I would love to see him end his HOF induction speech with him admitting to using steroids. The truth shall set you free.

When you toss a fastball at 92 MPH, you must be juicing.

Sorry no pitchers juiced except for Clemens and Pettitte.

Maddux never had to say he didnt juice because he looked like a high school econ professor.

You become irrational quickly on this topic.

If you think Frank did steroids, then just come out and say it. I don't believe you have yet. Don't dance around it.

No, Im not irrational. You actually believe that a player saying he was against steroids should receive special treatment.

You actually believe Frank is a special case. That's irrational.

You've actually said anyone who is suspicious of Frank has an agenda. Do you know how crazy that is in this era?

I believe A rod was also ALWAYS in favor of testing.

I dont know if Frank did or not. I know taking his word as definitive proof is very silly.

Is there any definitive or even flimsy proof out there that he did use like there are for a lot of other guys?

Same amount as Bagwell. But Rick has stated that Frank is a special case.

Again, say if you think Frank did steroids or not. It's simple.

Frank and Griffey are special cases. There are valid reasons why they should be believed that aren't true for almost everyone else. Just like he could be a Russian spy, he could have been on steroids his whole career. It's virtually impossible to prove a negative. However, Frank and Griffey have more reasons to believe them than pretty much everyone else.

Also, mentioning A-Rod is dumb. We KNOW he did. Sammy may be the best comparison, but with his performance in front of Congress we have major reasons to suspect he did too along with his statistically obvious evidence.

Frank is a special case. That doesn't mean Griffey or Bagwell aren't too.

How would I know? I dont pretend to know things that are unknowable.

This is beyond naive.

What are the special reasons other than saying "I didnt do it"

And please dont say "his career arc" as that's already been disproved (users and non users can go both ways late in their career)

No, mentioning A Rod is apt, because you base Frank's innocence on the fact that he was pro testing.

Griffey is the only guy in my mind that is above suspicion. He is the only player that could admit to it and leave me stunned. I could believe anyone else did it.

How many special cases are we dealing with here?

I disagree with your reasons that make you believe they are special cases.

I'm not going to argue with someone else who doesn't think Frank did steroids. Any person would acknowledge that it is almost always impossible to prove a negative. If your stance is that it is impossible to prove a negative then I agree.
