Help me out with something.

He didn't really kill anybody right? We're supposed to believe he's completely delusional and imagined the murders.....or did some of them occur and not others? Never quite figured that out.

no, he killed lots of people. its everyone else who's so delusional that they don't notice. Like the dry cleaner who keeps cleaning his blood soaked sheets.

Its up for interpretation according to the writer

He certainly didn't kill Paul Allen (guy at end had lunch with him after the purported murder)

In the movie everything from the atm cat scene on is presented as in his head

The Rules of Attraction is a better Ellis film adaptation.

the film seems to hint more at the fact that he didn't actually kill anyone. the film at least is a satire of consumerism, which is why the opening sequence is set up the way it is. it's a fairly obvious symbol and foretelling that what you see is not exactly what you're going to get.

bateman is presented as a self important person who actually isn't important at all. he is invisible, a nobody. he's rarely remembered, and so he builds this persona inside because of his narcissism. it's sociopathic behavior but it's harmless because he doesn't actually have the balls to do anything.

it's perfectly set in the 80's because that was a decade of greed and over consumption, the decade of self absorbed yuppies. his long yarns about 80's pop groups just further progresses his milquetoast personality. nobody pays attention to him.

whether that means he actually killed people and was "ignored"...i don't see a lot of evidence of that in the film. i don't think that's what the filmmaker was going for. that wasn't the joke.

i have no idea what that means. it's a completely different kind of film. they're both great films in their own right. but "the rules of attraction" is very underrated. i loved it.

It means, broseph, that I didn't like American Psycho.

But it probably went over my head like Arrested Development.

i don't think "american psycho" is hard to understand at all. it's actually pretty blunt. but it's really just as blunt as "rules of attraction". ellis raved about the film adaptation because he said it was the most "faithful". i don't know, i thought both were great movies. the victor sequence in "rules of attraction" is worth the price of admission alone.

Well said

Pet peeve. It had to be set in the 80s. 89 at the latest.

When he does the fake answering machine message for Paul he says Hasta La Vista Baby

T2 came out in 91

It just didn't seem like a film that would make that mistake

it wasn't a reference to T2. there were 2 songs in the 80's that used that phrase. "wild thing" by tone loc and "looking for a new love" by jody watley. it was most likely a reference to the latter...

no, guns n' roses saved most of their covers for "the spaghetti incident". except "knockin' on heaven's door" and "live and let die", thankfully.

I thought his descriptions of music were made to sound like something he had read and memorized for conversation rather than something that he felt himself to further highlight his void of personality and intelligence. It was similar to the dinner scene where he runs a litany of things his group should be caring about that are nothing but blurbs from the headline of a newspaper.

His entire life was about living like a commercial. I theorize, without having read the book, that his natural inclination is to be a sadistic murderer but his OCD level of need to chase the commercial life compels him to keep the murderousness under wraps.

The only person he "kills" who lives the similar life is Paul Allen

both are indications of the same identification as him being "invisible" but there's nothing in the film that lends evidence that he was memorizing anything. he doesn't spend time in the film memorizing things, he just makes stuff up. like having to return video tapes or having lunch with cliff huxtable. he tries to make himself sound important when he is not. trying to intellectualize mundane pop is one way the film exemplifies that behavior.

Well, we have to end apartheid for one. And slow down the nuclear arms race, stop terrorism and world hunger. We have to provide food and shelter for the homeless, and oppose racial discrimination and promote civil rights, while also promoting equal rights for women. We have to encourage a return to traditional moral values. Most importantly, we have to promote general social concern and less materialism in young people.

Might be a bunch of headlines strung together but its pretty fucking righteouss
