I thought you were supposed to burn the flag when it was damaged.

Interestingly the flag really didn't stand for the modern concept of nationalism until the Civil War. Prior to that it was basically just a Military symbol.

The flag code is regularly violated. Regularly. So if we make lunchboxes with the flag on them (prohibited) why not burn a flag?

Think about how many times you see the football field sized flag touch the ground because some ditzy teenager can't hold it up and take a selfie at the same time.

I have a 'murican flag bandana I wear when I work out and sweat all over it. I do think of the sacrifices all the soldiers made so that the bandana can be made in Taiwain while Im working out though so that has to count for something , right?

Flag code is reguarly violated but I'd suppose it's the spirit of the violation or to make money that makes it okay. Not saying it's right.

So in your opinion breaking the code for profit is better than breaking it for political freedom and exercise of the 1st amendment?

Sounded like you were making excuses for it and backing off enough to prohibit responsibility for it.

I think when a company puts a flag on a t shirt to sell for the 4th of July (and somebody wears it) or if the flag is not illuminated by somebody who puts it outside their house, they have a different target audience and motivation than the dumbass that is pissed about something and burns the flag. Not extremely different infractions but different motivations.

So for profit = ok, for political reasons = bad. I get you.

Nope I think everybody should follow flag etiquette, but it's not something I worry about. I do think one is better than the other but that does not make it okay.

That's not a picture of our flag.

Like the selfies of you helping make your point lately. It may be spank bank material for some.

Technically, I don't think that's a selfie. I'm an old man, Spaulding. You should know this shit better than I do.

It's not. I think you'd have to be holding the camera. I resist technology most of the time and think people have become more rude because of it. I'm just as old as you are, if not in body, then in spirit.

It's going in the spank bank anyway.

In grade school, the 6th grade was responsible for hanging the flag each day in front of the school. I was entrusted with this stewardship for the first half of the school year along with two other young ruffians. We hung the flag upside down one day, on accident. Ten minutes later the principal came down to our room and escorted us to her office for a come to Jesus meeting. Several outraged phone calls had been placed to the school by passing motorists and disgruntled busybodies who lived near the school. We were harangued, castigated, and made to feel the wrath of God (literally since it was a Catholic school). Stripped of our flag-hanging powers, we became pariahs to civic duty and an inspiration to al-Qaeda.

Thurgood Marshall had a simple hiring rule when he ran the NAACP Legal Defense team (From Brown v. Board of Ed until he was made a federal judge). IIRC it went something like:

To work for him, you would need to be willing to appreciate, legally brief and respect the Constitutional rights of a Klansman wishing to protest in the same manner as or against any other civil rights' protester. The whole good for the goose being good for the gander thing.

But flag burning in this country is a fairly sophomoric, but legal way to protest imo.

The usual way around "freedom of speech" issues regarding Flag burning is the cops arrest you for inciting a riot.

More likely public nuisance/illegal burning. (in the same way you can get nicked for burning leaves or garbage)
