Fired up my streaming app, and it was still on 670 from yesterday. First thing I head is McNeil wheez-laughing about something or other, then meatpants swearing that it's true that you can buy a rifle at Wal-Mart.

Anyhooz, it then goes to a Scoreboard Update...I assume it's going to be the mumbling, unable read/speak at the same time, Kerry Sayers - but, no, it's Matt Abbatacola.

Why is he doing updates? Is it literally because he asked for a 9-5 job, so they said he could do updates for McNeil then stay on to produce B&B? B&B is still popular, right? Why would the producer for their show be mandated to do updates for another show?

It just seems strange to me - the guy once had visions of hosting his own show. He was working. It was going to happen. Suddenly he became a giant asshat, and now he's doing every-half-hour news updates AND still producing the same show he's been producing for 10 years?

I guess I get them having Rongey "do something" during the offseason - and having field reporters come in and cover those duties when they're not on assignment - but the producer for your station's #1 show is regularly coming in and barfing out the same stories every 30 minutes?

Anyone have any insight?

CBS Radio is making a lot of cuts.

Legacy media like print and terrestrial radio are on a cakewalk-death-spiral where every year their revenues decrease so to keep going they have to lay off staff and ask their existing employees to do more.

Though as I recall, Bernstein held out of writing for the site for a while until he Monetized Everyblog. I don't blame him; you shouldn't have to write that much for free.

Assuming you were posting @ me, Big Fan, not sure what you're getting at. I've asked people at my office, and no one knows what The Score is (let alone what a Matt Abbata is) and I don't know Matt - so it'd be tough to ask him (outside of emailing or Tweeting him). I'm sure there are plenty of undercover current/former staff members lurking here, but I ain't one.

viewtopic.php?f=36&t=84262 :D

Checked out DB's blog without ghostery/adblock, it looks overly monetized now:

viewtopic.php?f=36&t=84262

thought maybe they had lil danny b go out and sign up someone to be the exclusive sponsor, like Michael Ferro tried to get Terry Savage to do to keep her gig at the Sun-Times:

Quote:
. Savage told Crain’s Wrapports LLC chairman Michael Ferro called her column “very expensive” and that management told her she could stay on if she found a new advertiser for the column. Savage said she reached out to a couple banks, “but I was uncomfortable with that” because of the perceived conflicts of interest.

In the same article, Sun-Times reprimanded Neil Steinberg for the sort of column-pimping they were encouraging Savage to engage in:

Quote:
Reducing the frequency of Steinberg’s column comes after an April 26 article about an exotic automobile time share company in Palatine that let Steinberg borrow a Bentley to drive to a party in Sycamore with his wife. Sun-Times Editor-in-chief Jim Kirk believed veered too much into advertorial. Kirk and Steinberg had a heated discussion about the column, and Steinberg told Crain’s Kirk "didn't like that and I respect that and I won't do that anymore.”

Just a guess here.

Drink got married, had a baby and moved from his down town apartment to Libertyville. The wife probably told drinky's cracker ass she wants him home at nights and weekends. No more chasing this talk show bullshit. She probably knows he sucks at it too. Plus the hike to the city from Libertyville isn't really worth what Mitch throws at producers for these shows.

To make up for the extra money he was making doing some night and weekend shows, drink probably begged Mitch to give him a few update shifts on Mac's show. Then it just bleeds into producing B&B. So it's a regular 9-6 gig and he's back home at normal hours.

Once again, just a guess.

I really don't get the whole update thing at all. Its a part time job I guess? Drinky sometimes. Kerry 1 maybe 2 days a week since baby? Say what you will about George but it was nice to have a full time guy actually trying to work.

They're either part-timers or subcontractors from Shadow Traffic.

I think Zim's strategy of having part timers do updates on middays and afternoons is to save money. You don't have to give somebody full benefits. And a salaried full timer would probably average more money per shift then just paying a part timer per shift.

Grote is the only full timer for the morning shift.

What do you get for an update shift at the Score anyway? Anybody know? $150? $200?

All though drinky isn't good at updates, I think they finally found a spot for him where he can do the least amount of damage. Talk show host - BAD. Reporter - BAD

It's tough to be bad at updates all the time. Sometimes drinky just does the read and goes away. His biggest problem is when he tries to write jokes or tries to talk to Mac or Spiegel. You can often tell Spiegel and Mac don't want to engage in his stupid talk. Drinky is not good at picking up this hint.

Did he really? Yeesh. Bet you he thought he was funny as hell when doing it. Drinky always thinks he's funny. People like drinky don't know they're not funny so they keep telling bad jokes their entire lives.

I do notice drinky likes to pause in his updates after one of his bad jokes. As if he's trying to signal the listeners that this is your opportunity to laugh because "I, drinky, just made a funny". Or he likes to repeat his bad jokes when Bernstein doesn't respond to it.

He's like an annoying kid that won't stop bothering Mom or Dad when they're trying to read the paper.

I remember that "Ucla" bit from an old episode of Married With Children. Matt is stealing Kelly Bundy's comedy bit.

Never saw that episode. I've heard people call them Ucla. But to do it on an update for a sports radio station? No.

Drinky: Fuck You. Wooo hoooo!!! It was funny. I'm great.

Beardown: Atta boy!!!

That is not true. WSCR billed 2.5 million dollar last year compared to 2012. I wonder how much of that was made up with the CBS Sports national time.

Robert Feder is the source of revenue article.

Yeah. The Score does well. But with Zim, it's not about how much you make, it's about how much you keep.

The 6 day-part guys make most of the Score's pay roll. Everybody else gets whatever falls off them. Zim doesn't let much fall off them so he can go to his NY bosses and show them the big profit margin. Then Zim gets his HUGE bonus.

Everybody at the Score besides "The BIG 6" has no leverage. They can ask for more money, but Zim knows he can get somebody else and the Score won't miss a beat. Producers, update people, night/weekend hosts are a dime a dozen. And if the current guys cry too much to Zim, he'll just pluck some dumb ass kid to replace them.

You really don't think there is another drinky out there that can answer the phones, tell bad jokes, say stupid shit and speak poorly? C'mon.

I could do that, but I would be taking a pay cut.
