Was NSJ there? If it was Winfield Food & Liquor on Beecher, they use our lights.

Yeah, that's the one.

Yeah, that's the one.

I've been there once. Decent craft selection from what I recall.

Not even a mile from Caliendo's and John's.

Yeah, I live about a block away from John's.

I got roped into a poker game tonight with some friend's of my brother, so I probably won't be out there till 10:00 at the earliest.

I thought about this as I drove over the bridge Monday afternoon.

4 months for what looked like a week end's worth of work.

You can literally jump across the river there when it isn't flooded. Absolutely ridiculous that it took that long.

We're leaving for Green Bay at 6 a.m. tomorrow, so I doubt we would be out past 10. Another time, DB.

You can definitely find a gem there, once in a while. A couple years ago, I found two Hop Juices well after they disappeared from the shelves at most stores.

DB is right. The store is filthy.

So I'm driving through Downtown Winfield today when I had to double back and get a better look at this:

Image

Sadly, no monument yet exists to commemorate the lives lost in the construction of this engineering marvel. Onlt vague remnants of a makeshift triage center at the Cut and Cuddle Grooming Salon. No record of the dedication, the Maya Angelou poem to the strains of Copeland's Fanfare for the Common Man. Only a simple, understated bronze plaque.

Image

Breathtaking. So majestic.

ELAINE: (looking by the window) Ooh, you have a lake?

JERRY: The lake isn't real.

HELEN: The lake is real.

MORTY: Are you kidding? They built the lake.

HELEN: But it's real. It's water.

An engineering marvel that Douchebag gets to cross daily.

He's a lucky man.

DB, what is the story with the closing of the Marathon station?

I didn't know it closed. The anti-development people probably think it causes too much traffic.

It's been closed for two weeks or so. Now, an empty gas station sits next to an empty fire station, both down the street from an empty restaurant.

Wasn't sure where to post this, but the location where Pepper Jack's was has been re-opened by new owners. It's now called Union House American Kitchen. Stopped by last week, and was pretty impressed. It doesn't really fit the normal Winfield "rube" vibe, but they have a very good beer selection, and some very good food. It's all locally sourced and what-not, so is a but pricey, and everything is served in small plates, so you can share with the rest of your group. One of the owners (Mario) is a very good guy.

And they have Hop Slam on tap. :drunken:

If I didn't live an hour away, I would visit more often. The place I am talking about above is literally one block away from me.

The Marathon gas station opened up again. The old Viking restaurant was bought, and will be renamed Cooper's Corner. Things are looking up in Winfield.

Whatever happened to the Viking?

That place used to always seem busy when I drove by.

It was busy, and the food was good. The story that I heard, and who knows if it's true or not, is that the owner was selling cocaine, and he got busted.

It was Morgan's Steakhouse for a bit, but it will always be The Viking to me.

I guess that explains why Bruce Oscar does his jam sessions in Carol Stream now.

Have you been to the Thai restaurant, where the old Winfield House is?
