You really have to hand it to the Edmonton Oilers. They drafted first overall three years in a row! I don't see anyone else making that commitment to development!

The Clippers model. Takes 25 or 30 years in some cases

Yes! I can't believe Sports Illustrated, being the socially progressive activist magazine that it has always been known for, didn't make a gay guy nobody's ever heard of Sportsman of the Year! What's next, selling magazines with objectified women on them!?

I am a life-long Cubs fan who has lost some interest in baseball but still watches my father struggle through every single pitch of every single at-bat, and Dan Bernstein has driven me to almost agree with you in these sentiments. It's quite a feat, really.

I understand that there will always be people who watch no matter what. I'll watch the Sox no matter what. But what bernstein is espousing, "stop watching", is bullshit. If you stop watching, you're counting on someone else to watch.

We don't know about the Sox guys. But we know about Kris Bryant. My God!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And I hate to put words in Dan's mouth since what he actually says is so ridiculous anyway, but methinks he would be the first to then excoriate the fans who opt out for denying the Cubs the flexibility to execute their vision.

Theo and Bernsie are the only two that know how to build a champion! Remember the Sizemore Indians....this could be the Cubs.

I remember the Sizemore Cubs.

Jerry Martin, Barry Foote, Steve Dillard, Scot "with one T" Thompson...who spells Scot with one T?

I lol when someone brings up Seattle's defense and Dan gets all hawwwwwwwny, goes to his serious radio guy voice, and starts talking about "hybridization". Just hilarious.

Also, what a strange giggle it was when Dan proclaimed how much his son LOVED Richard Sherman's rant. Can you guys imagine Dan's reaction if that were, uh, let's say Brian Urlacher screaming like a maniac? Would it be the same? Would it be "great"? As racist and dumb as Dan thinks "everybody" is, he certainly is when the roles are reversed.

To be fair, Quit Playin' did come across like a comic genius in comparison to the usual WYC drones. I know that's damning with faint praise, but I'd listen to a segment full of his craps than a single one from Steve in Bolingbrook, Ten Foot Midget, and the other regulars from that period. Now Mr Burns on the other hand...

God do I hate the "if you don't like it, stop going" argument.

I've been a fan for 30 years before these guys got here and I'll be a damn fan long after Theo is out of town, probably Ricketts too.

It's stupid to think I'm going to stop being a fan at this point.

Wasn't Quit Playin' kinda-sorta banned from Who You Crappin' for going furlongs off the reservation, or was that someone else who just sounded like Quit Playin'?

He's such a douche. There's just no other word. Baseball isn't allergy medicine. You can't just quit one brand because the price went up or it's not packaged right. There are memories and bonds you have that are the reason why you root for a team. You can't just stop caring and then start rooting for another team. I am seriously getting to the point where I hate Bernstein. It's a strong word, but it's true. I can't imagine being actual friends with him. He is a miserable, sad human being.

Oh man I had forgotten about Dark Twain. I wish I had saved the show with his debut crap where he went after Holmes so thoroughly that even Boers and Bernstein had to admit there was something there. There was also a great destruction of Barry Petchesky from the same segment if I recall.

If the Cubs become that Sizemore Indians that'd be great. Cliff Lee, CC Sabathia, Jake Westbrook, Fausto Carmona (Roberto Hernandez )

Hafner, Cabrera, Martinez, Peralta, Choo, Sizemore.

That was very good team destroyed by budgetary constraints and decline. But ideally the Cubs aren't poor and would never need to trade Sabathia, Lee, or Martinez type players because of budgetary constraints.

Exactly. And if you're actually buying tickets- or devoting the time to watch on television- you sure as fuck don't want the team to be utter garbage with the pipedream that they may win a World Series some time when Jason Bernstein is attending Cornell.

And like you said earlier, if people do as he says and start tuning out a team that keeps alienating his customers, he'll go on blast about how awful the fans are for cutting off the Cubs' revenues, only this time he won't be able to accuse them of fearing black neighborhoods and Jewish owners.

It's such a simple-minded idea of being a fan. "If you don't like it, don't go."

The reason you are a fan is because you care about the team, win or lose. Losing? Just give up then, don't have a negative or conflicting view of whatever management is doing. I've been through multiple "plans". Some very similar to this ground-breaking plan. Theo is the new Andy MacPhail. Excuse me for having some skepticism.

Dallas Green had a great plan too. But, that was a different time and the CBA was different and Reagan was president and computers weren't even used back then and people used their eyes, can you imagine? THEIR EYES   to look at players and make judgments and Kathleen Turner was still hot back then and and and and...

I hope to hell this works but that doesn't mean I have to like the process or leave.

Right. And you wouldn't be insane or an idiot or "baseball retarded" to want them to sign Jhonny Peralta and Ubauldo Jimenez for three years each. It just might get you to 83-85 wins and then who knows? And when Bryant and Baez come up and are Longoria and Cano, I'm sure you can find somewhere for Peralta to play and you don't really have a problem at all. And those are just names I'm throwing out there. But it isn't really too much to ask a "big market heritage franchise" to field a big league team.

It's the reason Bernstein would be horrible at all the things he claims to be an expert of. THIS.IS.A.BUSINESS. doesn't work. Every business, every industry, and even every culture has its own nuances. You can't treat the Cubs like you would a line of shoes. Why? Because it's overly simplistic! Baseball execs can't make a mockery of mascots and tradition and theme songs because without them, they wouldn't have the product they have, and they sure as hell wouldn't have the allegiance and loyal fan base they have. Sports are, at their heart, a way to bond and have fun with friends and family.

The whole idea of being a REAL.SMART.FAN is stupid anyway. Most of us on this board are probably considered to be very informed fans, and it's simply a choice. It is a reflection of what our interests are. 80% of a team's fan base doesn't know what salaries are or what the team's future direction is or how things are monetized. That's because they are doing their real job or raising families or pursuing other passions. Bernstein's whole "I hate uninformed fans" thing is counterintuitive to his whole "why can't you compartmentalize sports" thing. Not everyone has a job where they pretend to give a shit about sports for five hours a day. It's a luxury, not a requirement of a fan. Most fans have truly compartmentalized sports in a healthy way, and it is the organization's job to reel them in and make them interested.

Right this really is just another manifestation of the usual simplistic neoliberalism people have been complaining about for motnhs. Supporting a given team is nothing more than choosing to buy one product or another from the market; it has nothing to do with attachment or tradition or anything like that.

Don't like the product the Cubs are putting on the field? Simply exercise your market choice not to support them; you could instead choose to support another team like the Cardinals willy nilly or become a fan of the league as a whole. The last thing you should do though is complain, because they have a plan for success and it would be irrational and counterproductive to challenge their enlightened vision.

Dan's a hypocrite on this stance anyway. How many stories of bonding do we get with him and young Bernstein over Blackhawks games? What if the Blackhawks sucked? Would he stop watching with his kid?

Of course not and he shouldn't. His son is going to grow up a Blackhawks fan in large part because of all the time he spent watching with his Dad and the good feelings he has from that and other things over the years.
