I kind of quit reading after this point but this passage, this line of thought is fascinating and really telling. I've never thought this way about athletes in general, certain athletes when given a reason but not just as a general mindset -

Quote:
Sherman’s intelligence frightens people. The one thing we’ve traditionally had over athletes is that, despite their talent and money and celebrity, we would always be allowed to feel smarter than them. They’re jocks, so they’re supposed to be dumb enough for us to still salvage some superiority over them and feel good about ourselves without completely devoting ourselves to a completely superior false idol.

That makes a lot of sense coming from him and/or Bernstein

It partially explains their joy at pointing out stupidity

I've never had a single thought about that guy. Now I have several reasons to dislike him.

Baffoe.

I'm still undecided on Sherman until I can see his reaction from the mouth shot he's going to get sooner or later.

The interview that launched a thousand "why everyone in America is scared of powerful black men, except me, the writer, of course" articles.

So true and so sad.

The "I have a black friend" badge is very lame and this is so much worse.

Somehow I'm fairly certain that those who didn't like what Sherman did have no idea where he went to college or if he graduated or not.

What's all this "we" talk? I certainly hope he isn't lumping himself in with the hedge fund managers and Ivy League B-School grads that sit courtside at Bulls games.

He IS an actual fan of hip hop and not being a poser, but still this is just a cringe inducing way to start an article...

So I’m listening to A Tribe Called Quest’s “Buggin’ Out” yesterday,

I almost spit out my craft beer when I read this, so matter-of-factly does he tout convention.

And Richard Sherman is intelligent and, thus, different. And different is scary. He’s a member of a quiet revolution taking place in sports—that of the non-jock athlete. The physically and mentally superior person. We see it with thinker who happens to be a pitcher Brandon McCarthy and a growing number of baseball players not only embracing but preaching the New School of baseball that is those scary sabermetrics that threaten to destroy the Rockwellian image of the game held so dear by the blob. We take a very bright young basketball player and happily cut him down because of a mental illness—now he ain’t so special. We demonize it in a hard-working, very bright Vanderbilt-educated Chicago Bears quarterback who doesn’t suffer fools and doesn’t robotically smile on cue.

Thinker who happens to be a pitcher. And of course we have to turn the "why everyone in America is scared of powerful black men, except me, the writer, of course" into a defense of Jay Cutler.

Also, "admit that successful rich people are indeed superior to you in every possible way" just might out-Bernstein Bernstein.

How smart to do have to be to attend Stanford? Kenny Williams went there.

Agreed, Doc. I think everyone has grown up with and gone to H.S. and college with athletes who were also good students, so why would "we" think, unless given a reason, that "we" are intellectually superior to athletes? Just a guess, but I'll bet several of the people falling over themselves to writes these types of articles pointing the finger at everyone else think that way.

You know who else is probably that kind of person? Bernstein. I'm sure there are a few people here who remember him challenging Raymont Harris to a game of Scrabble. Bernsie didn't think a big, blaque, stud of a football player from a...*shudder*...state school could beat a product of privileged white America and THE Duke university at a game that depends on mental rather than physical agility.

And as RPB mentioned, starting of this kind of article with "So I’m listening to A Tribe Called Quest’s “Buggin’ Out” yesterday"
as a way of letting everyone know that "Hey, I'm not a racist! I like the hippity-hop music!" is cringe inducing.

I didn't see this while scrolling through the thread the first time. That really is the perfect description of all this hollow nonsense.
