BTW, from what I read in the thread it sounds like today's show was Norhtian levels of stupid.

I don't think anyone who listens to this show should be particularly surprised that Dan Bernstein takes an item related to sports (Sherman being the latest example, followed most recently by the Jason Collins, Tim Tebow/religion, and Jerry Sandusky stories) and calls people (in some portion, large segments of the population) who disagree with him bigots, racists, or supporters of child rape. For someone who tags himself as a proponent of tolerance, he's pretty quick to make accusations in the form of name calling to others. Sometimes, the views of others are ridiculous, but I'm just not interested in Bernstein turning sports stores (at the outset) into social, left-wing arguments.

I just want to get in front of this...I am withdrawing my own candidacy for the Brown's HC job to focus on the Super Bowl as well.

Oh yeah...and I'm admitting I'm a racist I guess because someone lacks sportsmanship...that makes complete sense.

So what your saying is that Dan Bernstein is the sports talk radio equivalent of sarsaparilla.

Bernstein is displaying a classic case of white liberal guilt. That to me is almost as appalling as racism itself because it attributes things to race that may not have anything to do with race. If Sherman were white the response would have been similar in my opinion. And if he would have been from down South you would have probably heard the dumb ass cracker drop from Boers and Bernstein. Increasingly they are attempting to use their show as a forum for social issues and in doing so they are overreaching a bit.

It's even worse because that is what Sherman was going for. Do you really think he wasn't trying to look like a scary badass?

It would be different if he had just been doing a normal interview and people were saying things about him like they do about Cam Newton.

Bernstein's tweet right before the White America one said "Nice Clubber Lang line by Sherman there"

So, he acted like a villian. Did it well, according to Dan, and then when people dont like him, they are racist.

I guess calling him a villian doesn't fill air time.

I really don't think he was trying to look like a scary badass. I just took it as a guy trying to draw attention to himself for making a fairly routine play. He was loud because he'd just stepped off the football field and the adrenaline was still pumping. He was wasn't swearing and didn't threaten anyone. The references that he made were towards Crabtree the football player. He didn't say anything that would challenge his manhood.

If Bernstein is legitimately concerned about race relations, using this incident as material for a bit and throwing around unfounded accusations of racism is incredibly counterproductive and just...classless as hell.

He was screaming. People were comparing it to a WWE promo.

He knew what he was doing and how it would come off. After all, he's not stupid. He went to Stanford.

If a guy on television in Seattle makes you clutch your purse or reach for a gun I don't think racism is your problem.

Not true when I first saw the picture of Willie Horton i was about fifteen years old. The picture of that guy would make anyone clutch their purse.

One of the things that bothers me about Bernstein's point is that he is making something racial that isn't. I hate when people attempt to propel whatever social conscious they may have into sports. I have never watched sports for that reason. When i first began watching sports there was a large segment of people that believed that Larry Bird was praised and lauded because he was white. The comments made By Isaiah Thomas were reflective of a lot of blacks at the time. Today I see it alot with black quarterbacks. If there is a comparison between black and white, African Americans invariably almost reflexively believe that the black one is better. For a long time There was a reluctance to acknowledge Dirk Nowitski as a great player. A lot of that had to do with race. I remember getting into arguments with people who believed that Josh Howard was better at basketball than Nowitski. There are other platforms to discuss race and though there is racism is everything once it begins to dominate every discussion that is a problem.

Because it was a part of a campaign designed to scare the shit out of white people. Unlike Sherman just yelling a bunch of shit after winning a football game.

Sports and social issues have been intertwined forever. It is much more apparent in Europe though. Also, the whole concept of "white guilt" is total bullshit. I have only heard it claimed by people who are upset they cannot be openly intolerant anymore.

I really don't I give maybe 10-15 minutes max. I just happened to catch the comment about Sherman. Maybe that stuff drives ratings and ultimately that is what matters. It reminds me a lot of the type of stuff that Mariotti used to write. The more you read and listen the more you realize that what they're talking about has little to actually do with sports.

I don't agree with that. I know what racism looks like and I also know what guilt looks like. I consider myself a liberal and I am stating that there is something to it. The president has been a recipient and a benefactor of it. It is the urge by whites to claim racism at the drop of a hat. It is the tendency to always yell racism whenever a black is criticized for anything. It is the reluctance to criticize African Americans for all that ails out of fear of being called a racist. Careers have been ruined just at the mere perception of it. I'm black and I think that is equally wrong because it obscures and negates legitimade instances of racism. White liberal guilt also has to do with the paternal nature in which some whites view African Americans. It is not just the far right that has coined the term though they are the ones that have popularized it. There is a segment of the Black population that uses the term also.

When have you ever felt this "white guilt"? I know I never have and I am a social worker so I am exposed to many different people in many different situations. Acknowledging that Caucasians have mistreated minorities is not "white guilt". Dominant majorities have been known to abuse their position, try to impose its values and norms and decide what is acceptable and unacceptable. Apparently, some have decided that Sherman's behavior occurred because he has
A higher melanin level then they do. That is dumb. Sherman
seems like an average "jock" that is full of
himself to me.

A whole program was written around it. Its known as Affirmative Action. I am a believer in the program and I have been the beneficiary of it at some point. I cannot personally recall a situation where i experienced it. I can state some instances in which it has been used. The knee jerk way in which liberals yell racism whenever Obama is criticized is but one instance. There are others.

So affirmative action was instituted to address white guilt?

Always thought it was meant to attempt to mitigate some societal issues (correctly or incorrectly). You learn something new everyday.

Both aspects were a part of it. Without white guilt there would not have been Affirmative Action. There was a need for Affirmative Action and I am not critical of it. The abolitionist movement was also an example of white guilt. Do you want others? Would you like me to expound on that?

With respect to Bernstein and the Sherman case He is saying that people are racists for because they are saying hey look at the angry black guy when the only person that is saying hey look at the angry black guy is he. He injected race into a discussion that heretofore was nonexistent. After doing so he called people racists. It is a tactic that is used by liberals to exercise white guilt. The Trayvon Martin case had it. The Henry Louis Gates incident had it. There are numerous instances where racism is exercised but it defeats the argument to inject racism into situations where it doesn't exist.
