Great news. I was hoping Theo was just driving up the price and getting the hell out of the way for someone to spend out their ass for him.

You don't think the owners are making enough money?

How many times in the last decade has the team with the highest-payroll won it all? Or even been in the World Series?

no..it's not that, and I don't really have an answer. It's just crazy that Yankees can have the payroll they have and the Astros can have the payroll they have. Who has a better chance of winning a world series in that scenario ? It is what it is....the have's and the have not's.

They don't need a salary cap. I think they could tweak the luxury tax stuff. Keep the money the same but if a team is ridiculously spending like the Yankees or Dodgers they should lose their first 5 picks in the next draft. Follow the same rules with giving the team that loses a FA to them the appropriate pick and then just eliminate the rest of their picks through the first 5 rounds. That would take away their trade leverage by depleting their top prospects and it would keep the small markets as competitive as ever.

Can't disagree...not sure what exactly a solution is, but I think you are on track in that the "penalties"....luxury tax, draft picks, etc should be more significant given the level of payroll for each team.

The Astros having a low payroll was a choice. They made something like $86M in profits last season. They easily could have put half of that into the payroll and fielded a competitive team but they decided to pocket the money instead. I agree with a salary floor but not a salary cap.

Could you find 2 guys on more ends of the spectrum on this issue.

1 Guy spent the most money on his stadium in hopes of generating the most income and having no limits in winning.
2, The other guy comes close to getting paid to be in my stadium and is still paying players from 5-10 years ago from annuities.

Shocking that Crane Kenney's presence didn't sway Tanaka!

Why was this idiot present when the Cubs made their presentation. WTF!

I'm glad the Cubs didn't do 7 years at 22M per. I cannot picture Tanaka being worth that. I think he'll be good, but that is simply too much for a guy who likely won't be a shut down ace each game.

Maybe Mrs. Tanaka and La La (Carmelo Anthony's wife) can be a duet.

IIRC, the Yankees have had the highest payroll in MLB since 01, and have made 4...won 1

I agree. I think if they would have gotten him for 18M a year with an opt out after 5 that would have been
my top dollar for the guy, and even that is pretty generous.

Yes. For all the 25 y.o. top of the rotation pitchers that are free agents. This guy was a unique case. Spend that 20 mil on some contractors and laborers to get some work done on the ballpark.

Or maybe, just maybe, toss a little into the payroll for this year.

A floor might be a good carrot to get a cap but the problem isn't simple. The problem is that when the Yankees, Dodgers and Rangers spend out their ass it doesn't just affect them. It skews the entire landscape. Arbitration, free agency and so on just get skewed badly. That is why guys like Danks and Samardza get stupid money.

How quick did the White Sox meeting with Tanaka go?

Jerry: Good morning
Agent: Good morning, let's start at 4 years.
Jerry: Goodbye.

Let's see if any of the Cubs beat guys can break what Cubs offered. I'm guessing we'll learn from a national or NY guy. Chicago beat writers are so lazy.

I think both the Cubs and White Sox will be glad they "missed" on this one.

The Yankees are probably doing this because they have to do something. Lots of unrest and Yankee Stadium has serious questions in terms of how empty it is.

Papa Joe Ricketts will tell Lil Tommy to funnel cash to the profit side of the ledger. No batting cages, no clubhouse renovations, no upgrades to player workout facilities, etc.

He will pat himself on the back knowing his PR campaign can claim the Cubs made a huge offer and were rebuffed (knowing it was a longshot Tanaka came here anyway).

As to more payroll this year? Sure, they'll sign someone like Maholm if he will accept 2.5M as a base for example with incentives, but that's it.

The bottom line? Let's hope the kids make strides this year because as Cubs fans, that's all we got.

How many of the current starting rotation will be around when the Cubs have a winning record?

I got Edwin Jackson and Travis Wood. They could be your 3-4 or 4-5.

Where are the top guys gonna come from? Trade some of the young bats or free agency?

Let's hope EJax is long gone. Banking on him being decent enough to be a real 4 is asking alot. I think he is a classic 4.70 ERA guy.

As to getting top pitching, maybe David Price via free agency??
