When I worked in the mall in 2005-2006, I once had a lady in line that was letting her kid order a kids meal. He couldn't have been more than 3. I asked him what kind of pizza he wanted, that we had cheese or sausage. The mother chimed in that "he is a vegetarian." Pretty independent little toddler!

I have a friend whose kid has been a vegetarian since he was about two. She gave him chicken and he asked what it was. She told him and he said, "Like the chickens we have in the yard?" She said yeah and he said, "I don't eat chickens. I don't eat animals. I love them." She said, "That's fine but you'll have to eat a lot of vegetables." And he replied, "But I don't like vegetables!" She asked him what he thought he was going to eat and he paused a moment and said, "Candy!"
 The kid is 13 now and still a vegetarian.

It's simple logic. Calorie counts clearly matter. Diet soda doesn't have calories. That's probably better. It's certainly not worse than the empty calories contained in regular soda unless there is some undiscovered link to cancer from one of the most used sweeteners in the world(just like weed!).

Is that what they teach at WW?

They also contain sodium benzoate or potassium benzoate which damage cells. Most regular sodas don't contain them. Diet coke is associated with kidney problems and endocrine problems.

The only things diet sodas have over regular sodas are they are less acidic and no calories but it fucks you up.

I'd think Hansen's cane sodas, Joia, or Dry brands are better than the coke/pepsi but haven't looked at it much. I'm a firm believer in the more natural you eat the more healthy you are. It's not just about calorie consumption.

Wouldn't "Diet Weed" be the same as that "legal weed" stuff that was popular a couple years back?

I tried it once, and it was awful. Was like smoking potpourri, and it gave me the worst headache I ever had in my life. Terrible...

I think if a soda uses real sugar vs high fructose corn syrup - then it's probably not as bad for you.

I'm going to guess Rick says no because it's calorie consumption that matters. Chemicals and how your body reacts to those chemicals makes no difference.

That study doesn't prove that it is worse though when you read the actual findings of the study. It just says it is roughly on par with the sugary versions. The articles then made their own leaps about it.

It depends what we are talking about. In terms of dieting and keeping/losing weight, calorie consumption matters more than anything else. Burn more calories than you use in a day and you lose weight. Eat more calories than you use in a day and you gain weight.

How you digest it and how it reacts with you can matter too but ultimately it's all about calories. For instance, we are discovering completely natural orange juice is still pretty bad for you too.

In reality, if you are worried about the healthiness of what you drink, you should drink water and iced tea.

This is what I understand is the current accepted stance. It's not worse. It may not be better.

If you want to drink soda, drink diet. If you are concerned that diet soda is too "dangerous" then don't drink either.

It's not a health food by any means. But is Vitamin Water or any of the sports drinks really good for you as water?

The funny thing is that people who are in the anti-diet soda crowd probably also consume alcohol. So the circle of intellectually inconsistent positions continues.

It makes the "evils of diet soda" discussion ring hollow when someone is guzzling down hard proof alcohol.

The asumption that always seems to be made is that everybody binges, or drinks in excess every time they drink.

It's true that there are a lot of people who have a strong tolerance for alcohol and do not get drunk every time they drink. But the issue for everyone is about where to draw the line. Alcoholism is poison for the liver and the soul and it's also a condition that is passed down through genetics in families. The only people who have zero percent chance of being alcoholics are those who do not drink.

I don't think it's about binge drinking. It's more about worrying about whatever diet coke will do to you when alcohol is literally a poison that is tolerable up to a certain level.

I think the statement, "Jesus drank wine." has been misused by so many people that it's really an inconsistent position with the rest of the New Testament especially considering passages that mention drunks not inheriting the Kingdom of God.

Are you saying that everyone that drinks alcohol is a drunk?

Jesus turned like 25 gallons of water into wine.

So he didn't know what he was doing, or you know better than Him?

No, I am not. But his miracle of turning water into wine should not be used as a license to drink alcohol. Christianity and social drinking are not compatible in the culture of the United States. The problem for Catholics is they don't see anything wrong with drinking alcohol, whereas the position of many Evangelical churches is complete abstinence from alcohol.

So his turning water into wine should be seen as it's OK for Jews to drink alcohol?

Even the Old Testament talks about the dangers of alcohol use: Proverbs 20:1: "Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise."

There is a difference between saying King David had hundreds of wives and that it's acceptable for men to be having polygamous relationships.

Your avoiding my questions either because you don't have an answer, or you don't understand them. I'll try again.

Jesus turned water into wine. On that we agree.

Can we agree that Jesus turned water into wine for human consumption?

If God hates alcohol and you won't get into Heaven because of it does that mean that Hell has an open bar?
