What's the story behind "Mondays"?

Maybe. Ive only heard it from white people in that way. Most black people I know have no issue saying the N word casually.
I am an African American and i will admit that I use it. The connotation is different in the way that African Americans use it. Within the African American community it has been used to address black men only. It is sort of accepted practice to use that term in conjunction with black men. Younger black men especially use the word. My "N" is a term that is used an awful lot. It is used differently by African Americans. Doesn't make it right but the historical significance of the word rarely enters the equation. I did years ago notice something when I referred to an older African American as a "N". We were in a lounge arguing over a card game i believe and during the argument I called him a "N". He went into a rage and actually attempted to swing on me. He could barely raise his arms up he was so old. He was from down South and he'd grown up during the period of segregation. The use of that word conjured up images for him because he'd actually lived through it. Since then I have been cognescent of the use of that word particularly around elderly individuals. It takes on a different level of significance for them.

Wasn't there a white guy defending his use of the N word on this board recently?
I dont recall anything specific like that recently. I know some guys here think its childish to type "the N Word" instead of just typing it.

I just never use it. Avoids confusion
I completely disagree with Sherman on that. The term thug was used a lot to describe members of the mafia. To suggest that it is synonymous with the "N" word is factually incorrect. Rap music has changed some of the connotation with the word but to say that it is another way of stating "N" is incorrect

This is a bit? It really has to be.

There is a segment of black men that embrace that term. Doesn't make it right but it is hard to cry foul when it goes another way. 2Pac's entire persona and a large part of his popularity (particularly among blacks) was centered on him being a thug. I didn't not hear a lot of complaining about his persona and the image that he cultivated when he was parading around with Thug plastered on hat t shirts and the like. To cap it off he even wore bandannas. After he started wearing bandannas a large segment of African Americans started wearing them as a means of not only emulating him but perpetuating a thug image

There is a very small minority of blacks that embrace the word thug. The rest of us have a right to be upset when it is used to describe a black person. Usually it is based entirely on appearances. There are a minority in every group that embraces certain things and the majority of those groups have every right to be pissed when they are labeled those things.

Very few of the self professed black leaders have spoken on the use of this word by African Americans. Michael Eric Dyson is one that immediately comes to mind he wrote a book on his love of 2Pac. He was not criticized for celebrating an individual that promoted a thug lifestyle. 2Pac has been revered as a martyr in the African American community. That small portion that you speak of is larger than you want to acknowledge. This is not a bit. I don't do bits. For the purpose of this discussion let's refrain from using the standard B&B jargon. I take this seriously. It cheapens the conversation to allude to things pertaining to some lame talk show. I know we are in their section but that is coincidental at this point.

Its selective outrage. The problem that I have is that we are not consistent with being pissed off. We're only pissed when a person of the another race uses the term. Rappers and comedians can use this language whenever they want and there is barely a whisper from the African American community. Apologies are made and before the apologies begin the excuses start.

The Trayvon Martin case had it. The Henry Louis Gates incident had it. There are numerous instances where racism is exercised but it defeats the argument to inject racism into situations where it doesn't exist.

You are proof that intelligent & rational liberals do exist. Well said.

What? Every individual gets to decide what upsets them and when it does. Entertainers of all races say and do a lot of things. We can separate those things from real life. Leonardo DiCaprio saying the N-word in Django isn't something that is going to upset me. Just like some studio gangster saying he's a thug won't bother me. Those aren't the same as someone calling me the N-word or calling me a thug. I would like to believe you can understand the difference. As I said before what a very small minority of people may embrace doesn't give anyone the right to label an entire group of people that. You should also be able to understand that. Instead of trying to justify why you may use certain words to describe an entire group of people. That's very unfortunate.

If it upsets you in one instance it should upset you in all instances. African Americans do not view it the same way when those words are used by African Americans. The Reilly Cooper incident received a lot of press. It would not have if those words were uttered by an African American. That is a fact. You are choosing to excuse the behavior on one hand and you're upset on the other. That is what I mean by selective outrage. Language is language the studio gangster issue has nothing to do with it. If a white musician uses "N" in a song his career is over. The whole thing about comedians using the "N" word is also bull. When Michael Richards went on his rant about blacks it severely damaged his career. Where was the so called comedic license in that. It is an obvious double standard.

Are you really saying Nas should be as upset by Leo DiCaprio's fictional character than if someone straight up called him a slur?

No I am not saying that. That is fiction. I am talking about real life. I don't take my cues from movies. It didn't upset me about what was said in the Godfather either. Does anyone remember the famous line about you can the "n" anything. That didn't offend me either because likewise its fiction. I am talking about people that will scream from the holy heavens about something like the Michael Richards incident but will remain silent on other issues. For I was a big N.W.A (rap group) fan back in the day. It stands for "N" with attitude. Didn't hurt Dre's career has it? I don't recall any leaders asking them to change their name either. Weren't any large scale boycotts of their music obviously.

So you are playing the role of Bernstein with your absolutes. Obviously context is important when it comes to just about everything being said. Surely you know the difference between what Michael Richards did and other white comedians that have used the word without an issue. Commonsense should help you answer most of the questions about why YOU using certain words as a slur or to stereotype an entire group of people will bother the majority of those people. Have a good day. BTW you can stop your "I'm black" routine. It never works. I'm sure you were entertained.

I don't have to prove anything and I will let that comment roll. Its the hypocrisy of it all and that is the part that is truly upsetting for me. I am wondering have a few a have chosen to question race in this whole thing. I'm from Phillips High School anyone that knows anything about that school will explain the demographics of it. I'm not going to do it.

I found that funny because it was a movie. I'm but i don't watch movies and correlate them with social commentary. It's supposed to be entertainment. I can see where some would have been offended. I'm sure he took some heat I didn't follow that because it's a movie. I found funny because he seemed to enjoy using that word. It was acting for me.
