It will be funny when the Cubs block out the rooftop view and the rooftop owners respond by turning it into a better experience than being in the stadium at a cheaper price. Watch the game on television. Eat and drink all you want. Enjoy being outside and then go drink at the bars with your friends afterwards.

So, the rooftop will just be a bar then?

And the selling point will be "Come hang out at our bar near the stadium before you go meet your friends at another lower bar near the stadium?"

That's pretty much what they are now. You can see the gist of the game from the rooftops if you want. But most people and myself when we went were there to enjoy the weather, feast and drink beers.

No, youre outside with somewhat of a view into the park eating better food than they have inside.I think you highly underestimste how much more charm the rooftops give as opposed to a Bud or Under Armor sign. The Cubs will end up losers on this. But what else would anyone expect?

You could describe it like that.

You also could describe it as "Come eat and drink all you want while still watching the game and getting the atmosphere at 50% of the price of going to the game and don't deal with the hassles of security and having to wait in line for 10 minutes to use the bathroom or get a beer".

The thing is, anyone who is actually concerned with watching the game isn't going to a rooftop. The view is much worse. It's clear there is a market for people that don't need to have the best view. I think we've all looked into suites at other stadiums and seen them watching other stuff and not even paying attention during game action.

I dont think the view can be completely blocked.

They'd have to find a way to provide enough value. Either make it cheaper or provide things the Cubs can't/won't provide.

The atmosphere would still be pretty similar.

They can discount the tickets by 17% right off the bat. And when Bryant and Baez are driving the Cubs to multiple championships demand should be great and drive the prices right back up.

The idea that the Cubs can simply move to a suburb and make more money is stupid. Some things arent transportable. Why doesnt the guy who owns Louis Lunch in New Haven just open a 20,000 square foot version in Times Square? He'd be even richer!

Disagree, the cubs would draw 3 million in Arlington hts if they were a 90 plus win team yearly...huge fanbase.

Not sure counting on being as successful as the most successful team in the history of professional sports (Yanks) is a wise gamble for any team.

They will never be a "90+ win team" yearly. No one is. If the Cubs moved the Sox franchise would be worth more than the Cubs within five years. bernstein's position starts to make more sense if maybe he's just carrying water fir Uncle Jer.

What I meant was if the cubs could replicate what the RAngers,Tigers or rays have done the last 5 years they draw 3million. anywhere.

Weren't these rooftop buildings going for about $75K in 1980?

I guess if the Cubs were sold for $20m back then and are now worth $1b, then that would loosely translate to a rooftop going from $75k to $3.75m today.

I've been saying for years (because sadly, WSCR has been pushing this for years) that the Score wants the Cubs marginalized into the 'burbs so that the White Sox have the city of Chicago to themselves. You will not get 41,000 people to converge upon Arlington Heights 81 times a year. People shit on Chicago from afar, whether it's from New York or Naperville, but, um, the city still has a whole shit ton of money and people in it, particularly downtown and on the north side. If you have that access to so many people and so much money, why would you willingly take yourself away from it and let someone else have it? I feel like I'm losing my mind here sometimes.

the rooftops are a ticket based establishment. Nobody just walks in.

If you made very rooftop on Sheffield just a bar, you would have turnover and instead of seating 100, you would seat 300 or 400 in a day.

And that makes a dent in the Murphys and Sportscorner regular bar business, which is owned by the spokesperson of the group and the guy who owns the most rooftop space around.

the conflict of interest is all around in this issue.

Chicago is so politically corrupt and is sliding backwards as a city right now. People gave Daley a lot of crap but he was really good at keeping Chicago from sliding into the same urban decay that symbolized places like Detroit, St. Louis, and Atlanta. I think the winning play here is Rosemont - a fairly national and large regional fan base would have air access through O'Hare along with the burbs. The North Side and Loop/River North fans would have blue line access. The Cubs could replicate Wrigley with the ivy, rooftops they own and control with better views. Sure people might be upset at first but they would get over it with time and a well-executed stadium concept. Cub fans are a resilient bunch. They have put up with 105 years of losing, yet they would bolt from Wrigley if the Cubs built a new Wrigley in the burbs? I don't buy it.

Honestly, if the Bears wanted to move to Rosemont or something, I wouldn't care. I don't romanticize football venues. Put a huge fuckin' bowl in Rosemont with a ton of parking space for drivers and tailgaters, and honestly, that would be better for everyone than the tiny little spaceship on the lakefront. You only go eight times a year anyway. Baseball, though, not only are the ballparks something special in a way football stadiums aren't (and indoor arenas especially aren't), but I think it's important that you put parks in high-density areas when possible. Sure, there are exceptions like Angel Stadium, or the Rangers' mall-park in Arlington, or Miller Park, which is in some bumfuckingnowhere industrial zone, but you'll generally find that parks are in places where lots of people are already there and lots more can readily get there. And besides, while you laid out what the Cubs could do in terms of creating a facsimile of an urban neighborhood, I'd really prefer an actual urban neighborhood. I really thought we were past The Suburbs Are Our Future as a tenet of urban planning.

In the interest of crosstown fairness, I'd be a little sad if the White Sox moved to Tinley Park or Schererville or something. Baseball is a city game to me.

That is because he sold off assets for pennies on the dollar like the sky way and parking meters. He got out once he had nothing to sell off anymore.

There's a bunch of wrong stuff here. First, Daley enriched his friends, busted the city, and left a mess for others to deal with.

And the Cubs have zero ability to "create" another Wrigley in Rosemont or anywhere else. It wasn't created by Really Smart Guys in the first place. It occurred due to a confluence of events and circumstances.

If you really think it's just a bad baseball team that people love, you're wrong.

I just love coming here periodically and checking the posts on this show. My only question is just how bad do these two morons have to become before you guys stop listening? We're still talking buses from Iowa all over the place? If so, Rosemont doesn't matter to anyone. I'd go a step further to suggest placing them at Las Vegas, either at the airport or as a part of a casino makes just as much (if not more) sense.

Once you lose your mind that much, considering moving them to Branson also makes a lot of sense. Actually, more, because it'd be the only sporting-related attraction in that area.

Baseball is a city game to me.

man i was rooting for the bears to move out to Elk Grove Village (my hometown) when those threats were leveled to make progress towards the aforementioned spaceship (in SF's defense i will say that there isn't a bad seat in the stadium, no matter what it looks like on the outside). that area where they were talking about building it is a giant V shape stretch of land straddled by higgins and landmeier rd with plenty of space for a big ol stadium and little menial industrial park/zoning around that could easily get BTFO for parking/restaurants/entertainment/CTA-blue-line-extension (the nicest part of it all).

but mainly, i wondered what would have happened to the residental zones around the proposed stadium. would the presence of new soldier field have caused the property value to go up as commercial enterprises wanted to set up shop around the stadium, or would it have turned into a little dystopian ghetto with all kinds of parking wars going on (cuz i'm sure the village would have made it EG RESIDENTS ONLY parking there, leading to all kinds of ppl trying to sell driveway space for $10-30/car) and ultimately would the hordes of drinky bears fans have trolled around the neighborhood causing chaos and ruin? higher crime? i wanted to see elk grove get the reacharound from adam smith's invisible hand, if not the drippage from the trickle down effect (which for some reason makes me think of a woman's "i'm trying to please you" puppy eyes face when she's/done blowing you)

but alas, it was all a shamockery as it was just leverage for them to land the spaceship and keep everything on the lakefront, which at least didn't interfere with those oh-so-fun train parties en route to union station at 8-10am, nor did it affect the classic "miserable sleepy hangover" train backs circa 5-6pm. those are an institution in and of itself.
