Ah, Maynard Ferguson. He played at my high school when he was near the end and touring high schools. Our jazz ensemble got to open for his band. It was a lot of fun. It was also right in the midst of the Cubs' playoff run, what a fun time that was. He had lost a little off the top -- he was 75, for god's sake -- but could still scream. Still, though, I get a little twinge of embarrassment and shame listening to that sort of mainstream jazz fusion. Something about that "Gonna Fly Now" arrangement is just so ripe for ridicule. It's not good jazz, it's not good disco, it's just dreck. Sorry.

You know, we gotta bring back that Jazz Download of the Day we were doing back around March. That was good.
