Let's play the what's the point game, ok...

What's the point of a large HP small hatchback? I mean who needs to have over even really 150 HP for such a small vehicle? You don't need to exceed 55 MPH on almost all roads in Illinois and 70-75 on almost any road in America and at no point ever would anyone need to have a sub 18 second 1/4 mile time to get to work or to Whole Foods or Manchu Wok.

First of all, it isn't all about horsepower. Torque is more important for street driving "excitement."

Secondly, I exceed the 55 MPH speed limit daily on I-90. As do 97% of all other highway drivers.

Thirdly, there is a large group of folks that bring their cars to closed circuits. Track days, drag strips, and autocross.

Fourthly, why would a small hatchback with power be worse than your Mustang with power? Or a truck with power? Is superior handling suddenly a bad thing?

No question.

You should absolutely pump as much time, money and energy as you can into a small compact and a rental unit.

Scrote.

The fact that this was said unironically is what makes it so funny.

If you don't understand why people like Mustangs then you aren't the car guy you claim to be.

My car outperforms Mustangs.

Isn't it performance in these types of vehicles that is so important?

V6 Mustangs are slow, and the 5.0 is very nice, as long as you would like to go straight only.

The Boss and GT500 fix these issues as best they can...but now we're talking a whole new price range.

Again, if you don't understand why a mustang is a car people like then you have a lack of car knowledge.

It's not all about fractions of a second when you and your friends go to the salt flats.

I understand why 30 year old wives enjoy convertible V6 mustangs.

I understand why Nascar fans like 5.0 Mustangs.

But many 'car people' understand that Mustangs are bloated coupes with severe handling limitations.

Many 'car people' also view hot hatches as mini-station wagons. So, not sure what your point is.

Some people like muscle cars more.

I don't see any Mustangs on this list.

Look at the cars the GTI is in the discussion with; Lotus, Porsche, BMW M, GT-R, Corvette....

No. One certainly isn't a car person if they are unable to correctly identify classes of vehicle.

They stopped making muscle cars around 1971 due to the enviro-nazis.

Or it had to do with the 1973 oil crisis.

Since I'm no longer a Mustang guy I don't know how much my opinion matters but her' go'...
My Mustang was a 4.6, not a 5.0. The 4.6 was a damn fine engine, IMHO one of the best ever built. That had over 120k miles on it by the time I was sold it and it's still out there truckin, performed just like it did on day one and never lost any juice
.
The 4.6 DOHC Turbo might have been at the time the fastest production car on the market, at least under $100k.

Some folks just don't want a foreign car look. Yeah I get how superior the Europeans are to us but I just couldn't ever see myself in a wagon. It's not me. I loved the Mustang's lines, just pretty long hood and swept back rear. The newer ones not so much but the 1999's to 2004's were very nice to look at... sounded just sweet with that nice deep 8 cylinder growl.

Those european and asian cars just don't look... cool. This is just an opinion, mind you, but they just look silly to me. Smallish and just not... cool.

Nowadays I find a lot more functionality in my pickup. I don't feel the need to be the first asshole in line at every red nor do I need to "smoke" drivers. I guess I grew up some between 2002 when I bought the 'Stang and 2012 when I sold her. I see kids doing that shit now and I kinda laugh at them. Wistfully.

Going to the track is one thing. My brother builds Supras and he takes em to the track and dyno. His 94 Supra would destroy your wagon, not even remotely close to your wagon. Trust me.

I suppose the foreign car thing is kinda cool if you build them yourself and tinker in your garage but if all you do is put goofy lights on them and take it to someone else's speedshop it's not as cool.

Maybe because it's an awful looking car. What's up with the portholes?

Count me among the douchebags! I love my Lincoln Navigator. I have driven large SUV's for a long time. I like the cargo room for roadtrips, the 4WD, & like sitting up high & seeing down the road. I don't care about MPG or gas cost. I don't like driving the Wifes VW or my car. Just too damn small.

Any car can be a ridiculous beast when properly tuned. Obviously ever car's starting point is different. The GTI is some of the best bang for your buck in the world, and that is with or without the nerfed turbo. Meanwhile, I must remind you that I've installed every aftermarket part on my car by myself, or with my buddy. The only thing I brought my car to a shop for was the ECU tune, and that is because regular guys don't have the means to access and edit ECU mappings.

And Darkside, you know enough about cars to not refer to mine as a wagon. I don't know if you're using the term to try to slight my car or if you're just emulating other posts on the board.

A Supra is in another class of car. Even tuned as it is, but GTI is still FWD and therefore limited by traction. However, these cars stopped being produced before I even got my license, and to get an early 1990's in decent condition with 150,000+ miles on it would still cost you about $20,000 in 2014. Never really an option for me. I'd slightly prefer a 300ZX if I could fine one, as well.

edit: I cannot recall how this thread became about anything related to cars. :P
