Doesn't Wrigley have landmark status? Is that the government approval they need? If so, isn't that rather difficult to obtain?

This issue and the actual issue of this sign has been done for some time now, but has been held up due to the city telling the cubs to wait on this rooftop issue.

personally, I think Rahm told the cubs, Go ahead and formally reapply, as the application would need to be updated as these permits are only good for a 1 year period to do the work.

So, there is no more formal reviews of the plans, etc. I assume someone might do a review of it to make sure it is the same plane that was approved, but I dont think the Cubs submit this without Rahm telling them to do so.

Rahm isn't stupid. Moving isn't a real possibility. Wrigley is the golden goose. It would be like a seven year old threatening to find new parents.

How is that other MLB teams and cities even survive then JORR? They don't all play in Wrigley. Rickett's ruined his leverage by committing to staying at Wrigley. Yes...Wrigley has a natural draw and is a tourist stop / destination....but that is not to say realistically the Cubs could not be a successful business and team elsewhere. Someone would give them a new golden goose to replace the old one!

The Cubs aren't "surviving", they're rolling in cash as one of the most powerful teams in pro sports. And you think it's wise to cede the city to the White Sox? I can't understand why Cub fans act as if it's ordained that "the Cubs are just popular" as if it's their great play or snazzy uniforms that make them so. A HUGE part of that popularity is based on playing in one of two remaining antique ballparks in the game. Understanding that seems like common sense to me.

I don't think the Cubs would fold if they moved to Arlington Heights. But I do think that within several years they would be on equal footing with the White Sox and eventually the Sox would be the stronger franchise. The Ricketts can cement their legacy by leaving Wrigley the way the Allyns cemented theirs by taking the Sox to UHF.

Still producing a lot. The most profitable team in MLB. If they played in U.S. Cellular they might not draw a million.

If the park is the golden goose, then the gold has to be a packed house and there hasnt been.

And the Cubs will never cede to the White Sox. That battle is over.

That's just silly. The Cubs have alresdy ceded to some degree. They're harder to find on TV and now theyre going to ruin their park.

Until a part of White Sox fandom doesn't include priding themselves on not going to the ballpark or watching unless they're over .500 then Cubs popularity will be fine.

I think it's silly to look at the two teams, their fanbases, and how their covered and think it could ever be equal again.

Tell you what, if the White Sox become the more popular team, Ill buy you a beer at a Sox game

Agree, the Sox missed a great chance the past few years. They know it to. Thats why Jerry let kenny spend and spend more than at other time in the history of the team.

Isnt a big part of Cub fandom doing the same now? Somehow I dont think destroying an iconic ballpark in pursuit of revenue streams is going to help long term.

Moving yes. Putting up signs, jumbotrons, etc prolly not. Fenway has done the same and it's done fine for the most part.

Does anyone besides media dopes actually care about media day at the Super Bowl? Are we going to get any kind of breaking stories or hard hitting journalism?

Nope...

I couldn't care less about the media day. I'm just using it to deflect what JORR is trying to do - it's my old stand by.

Is there a gigantic media day for baseball that I'm unaware of? (however - media day is great for finding the next hot young reporter from Telemundo that is willing to wear a bikini to get interviews - you gotta respect that :salut: ).

What is JORR trying to do? I asked a simple question. What makes you think theat signs and a video board will make the Cubs more popular?

The Cubs will almost certainly always be the dominant team in Chicago, even if they move to Schaumburg. That war is lost.

I mean, I guess if Jerry delivers 6 World Series titles to go with his 6 NBA championships there may be people who jump ship but it's highly unlikely Jerry wins more than one or two more World Series in the near future.

Yeah, the Cubs seem to be destroying the cash machine that was Wrigley where people would go no matter how much of an effort was put in to win but they are still the dominant team.

I disagree with you there. There were events that caused the Cubs to be the dominant team. If you're paying attention you can see a different set of events that is quite likely to result in the Sox becoming the dominant team in the not so distant future. We can start with the demographics in the South Loop that have changed radically over the past ten or fifteen years. The television advantage that the Sox foolishly allowed the Cubs to take is gone. And once Wrigley Field is covered with signs and flashing lights, the charming little ballpark will be no more. Moving to Schaumburg would simply speed that process up.

To suggest that "that's just the way it is" or "that war is over" is as short-sighted as a fly who happens to be born in a rainy week believing that the world has no sunshine.

I think the Wrigley guarantee Rickett's gave the old man was a mistake. Attendance has declined and the Cubs must now be a normal team. Besides the team performance there are a couple factors I mentioned before. One is the recession which hopefully won't last forever. The other is larger. Since the rules changes there are not as many games on WGN and the ones that are no longer are shown on the cable superstation. The Bus loads that came from all over since 1984 are going to continue to diminish as younger people not associated with them through tv are not being replaced.

I'm sure the Mets are thinking they will overtake the Yankees one day too.

I just don't really see the mechanism for change. The Cubs are losing clear advantages they had but that doesn't mean they are going to put themselves at a disadvantage. If you hate how Wrigley is filled with advertisements you'll hate it with US Cellular. If you hate they aren't on WGN then you'll hate that the Sox aren't on WGN either.

People are set in their ways. They love the Cubs and want to see the "Cubs win before I die". They went this far. Why jump to the Sox without a great reason to do so?

If you don't live in Wrigleyville, I don't even know why the Cubs moving would matter. It's still a train ride away. It's just a different train and maybe a few extra minutes to get there. However, you also have the option of driving to the game and parking and walking in pretty easily.

True, but that may take awhile. There are still fans of that generation that will attempt to brainwash their children. In most cases it will work. But it becomes a harder sell when you're a Southsider and all those special things that attracted your dad to the Cubs are gone.

Except that week is 30 years. You're not undoing 30 years with the things you've listed.

And Wrigley will always be Wrigley. If it has the old scoreboard, Ivy and the red sign it will be fine

Horrible comparison. The Sox aren't an expansion team. And the Cubs certainly aren't the Yankees.

Right, but 30 years goes by quick. It shouldn't be a surprise if the Sox are the dominant team in 2028. Wrigley won't always be "Wrigley". It was the same park in 1972 when no one was there. Time and the destruction of the other old parks made it "special". Now Ricketts wants it both ways. New revenue from modern amenities without losing the revenue from being the old special place. I don't see how that can work.

It's like the difference between Madonna and Carole King. Carole King is just being who she is and looks fine doing it. Madonna is trying to compete with Katy Perry and she'll lose every time.

Expansion team? So that is relevant but the huge fan base the Cubs built up over the last decades is easily overcome?

In terms of popularity, it's a pretty good comparison. Now, it turns out the Yankees built that fan base by winning, whereas the Cubs seemed to build it by losing.
