Right, Hank, but I think putting yourself in a corner where you need to win to pay the bills is probably not the best business model.

I dont think fielding a competitive team is too much to ask. Even if the Cubs were hovering around .500, the place would be back to normal.

They seem to be slowly destroying the rooftops.
They are building a hotel and retail space and a health club.

This will change the local cool neighborhood feel.

Yeah, that's probably right for now. But I think a lot of people seriously underestimate Wrigley Field and its contribution to the popularity of the Cubs.

When the Sox win, they sell tickets too. Ricketts' whole pitch to Big Daddy was that the Cubs make money no matter what. If that isn't the case, Joe ain't gonna be happy. You can count on beautiful girls and 65 days of sunshine. You can't count on winning.

You seem to be taking the stance that the Cubs can pretty much change everything and it will still feel the same.

What would the Cubs have to do in order to make Wrigley feel like a standard MLB stadium?

Yeah but the whole 'mystique' of Wrigley is really just pink hats and frat guys getting hammered. Those people might not be showing up now because the team has been so bad for so long. The positive spin is that if you string together a couple decent seasons you get all those people back again and you can afford to have a down year once in a while. I think attendance in 05-06 was still good despite them not winning.

The CUbs need to be average to sell tickets, the Sox need to be good. You should certainly be able to put together a team that is hovering around .500 most seasons with the Cubs resources.

Say what you will about Hendry but he had that idea down. Never bottomed out for long. It didnt work in the long run but I'll take 2003-2008 vs 2009-2014. And this is what happens when you lose for too long. You start pining for Jim Fucking Hendry.

Not really. I dont think a hotel is gonna change everything though

Moving it. Fucking with any of the famous parts. etc.

I think if they are in a park called Wrigley with the green scoreboard, ivy, and surrounded by bars, it'll be ok.

The hotel is replacing a Mc Donald's and parking lot with a tent on it. It's an improvement, especially with the correct architecture. I think the biggest ambience destroying feature is the sign over Clark Street.

There is a compromise somewhere in here that will work for everyone. I imagine both sides will realize it on the eve of trial, after millions of dollars have been spent on legal fees, as they always do.

Besides the WGN disadvantages me and a couple others mentioned it could be generational as well. How old are all those residents and northside frat boys from 1984 now anyway? Furthermore, less and less young people like to go to baseball games. They do other shit. Sure you will always get the band wagon bump if they are good. But if they suck we have evidence it is over. What I am trying to say I guess is a lot of the keep Wrigley exactly the same arguments are geared at older fans that will not be around forever. It may be smarter long term to become a modern family/young people geared park.

Great find on rooftop contract by @thekapman . Section 6,6 states the Cubs cannot block views permanently . Very dicey for arbitrator.

Why can't they just install a retractable/hydraulic LEDscreen that is only up on gamedays?

Section 6.6 says they can block anything they want as long as its part of an expansion plan.

Right, but with a retractable, you don't even have to have a ruling on certain contract language being inconsistent and/or ambiguous.

They could also just take down the signs at the end of the season and put them in storage.

They can have a new tradition of the signage raising right before the game starts and then goes down as they sing "Go Cubs Go!". Everyone can stand and applaud the monetization of Wrigley every single day!

There's a new batch every few years. That isn't going to happen in Schaumburg or Arlington Heights.

They could pay Ronnie Woo Woo to walk around the stadium carrying a sandwich board.

How do the Bulls and Blackhawks keep on getting new fans without an awesome neighborhood to live in right by the stadium?

If the Chicago Cubs couldn't do well in a stadium in Schaumburg then baseball isn't nearly as popular as you think it is. The funny thing about your thoughts on Wrigley is that they are basically "The Cubs are popular because of everything but the product on the field".

The Blackhawks have done it by winning Championships, and the year before they won they at least made the conference finals.

Maybe the Cubs should actually be trying to win a playoff series.

2003 they beat the Atlanta Braves in the NLDS to Advance to the NLCS where they faced the Marlins. It wasn't so long ago that it should be so easily forgotten.

But what's ahead is infinitely more exciting and we should see the tide begin to turn this season, with at least a couple of the promising young players they are developing, making it to the majors and beginning to contribute at the major league level. before long, a period of sustained success will have begun and Cub fans will rejoice as never before.

I am the link. I was there in Atlanta on October 5th 2003. Kerry Wood beat Mike Hampton. Aramis Ramirez hit a 2 run homer in the 6th, which was the biggest hit in the ballgame. Alex Gonzalez also had a solo homer in the game, which though held in Atlanta, was filled with many more Cubs fans than Braves fans. The only winning playoff series for the Cubs since 1908 and I was there.

A lot of them. Plus a lot of guys after they leave Wrigleyville and before they head to Naperville.

Well, you know I'm not a Cub fan, but I go to plenty of Cub games. A day game at Wrigley is great. I'd go to see the Cubs in Schaumburg as often as I go to see the Brewers in Milwaukee. Maybe once every ten years.

And I, a season ticket holder go to one game a year. Opening Day. Were they in Shaumburg, I would go every weekend they were in town plus a ton of weeknights.

That's great. Are you suggesting the Cubs should base their decisions on what people in the Schaumburg or other Northwest suburbs find convenient?

why...yes!

I'd move to the west loop if I could afford it. This ain't the same neighborhood that was there 20 years ago.

All fucknut had to do was position the stadium so that the open part faced the skyline rather than the RT Homes previously and now nothing. He had his iconic backround possibility and blew it.
