I think the genre of The Tonight Show shows is dying. No one cares about celebrity interviews anymore because celebrities are interview 24 hours around the clock by TMZ and their own Twitters. 20 years ago it was unique.

I think that's why kimmel and falon are kind of doing well with young people. The skits they do and the the jokes they set up are funny

I really don't need to see celebrities interviewed. I'd like to see someone have the balls to change the format and have celebrity interviews be a sometimes things

you can also add to that the obligatory musical guest that pretty much everyone has every night. it's completely random and much like you don't need to see celebrities interviewed, i don't need to see a band playing a truncated version of whatever their current single is , that they've likely played on a 100 other shows and promos

That Carson/Letterman interview was quite the experience.
Carson seemed so pissed for Letterman, which isn't surprising as Carson saw Letterman like a son. It's like they made a deal backstage to make Dave look good and let Carson be the shit stirrer. Which is exactly how you play that out.

More shocking than Fallon getting the Tonight Show is how this former SNL Alum got in a Oscar nominated movie, after doing this! (Nebraska-Plays Bruce Dern's son)

LOL...alot of bitter people here. Seinfeld has stated that Leno is the best ever at stand up. Funny whenever someone starts a post here with their viewpoint everybody like sheep falls in line. If someone disagrees that person gets mocked by the babies here.

That's probably a joke. Like when people say Colin Quinn is funny.

Nope. Both are true. Your sense of humor is broken.

I was a Letterman guy for a long time, but he really doesn't give a **** anymore. I've actually started to like Kimmel - his "bits" are really good and he's a pretty good interviewer. His Sarah Silverman interview was excellent as when Matt Damon took over the show.

Don't get the Fallon thing ... just totally unfunny to me.

Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Rodney Dangerfield, Eddie Murphy, Robin Williams. . . all better than Leno.

Shit, throwbacks Henny Youngman and Don Rickles are better than Leno!

Yeah saying Leno is the best standup comic ever is akin to saying Antonio Freeman is the best WR of all time. It had to have been a joke.

Nope. And if you want to do some research, you'll find Leno is massively respected by most comedians. (Above and beyond the normal support they show each other)

He was a completely different guy than he is now. The Tonight show is not close to his stand up.

I've heard his standup. Carlin, Pryor, Murphy, Hicks, etc. are all massively respected too. And they are miles and miles ahead of Leno. Leno was average on his best days. If someone is seriously trying to make a case that Leno is better than Carlin, Pryor, or Hicks, I pretty much would lose any respect for their opinion on the topic. Even if it is Seinfeld.

Also, who cares if he was a good stand up comedian? Magic Johnson was a great basketball player. He sucked as a tv host too.

Ok, well, if you dont want to lose respect than dont read up on comedians opinion of Leno.

Which standup of Leno's have you heard? You gotta go back pre gray hair.

Anyway, he was a decent standup. I like all the guys you mentioned better, but I think Seinfeld probably knows what he's talking about.

If he was being serious, then he really doesn't know what he's talking about. You cant really even make a case that Leno is better than Carlin. If you could, what would it sound like?

It would sound like Jerry Seinfeld.

Seriously though, I really would like to hear his explanation. Is there a link? Did he say it as a throwaway line? It's just a dumbfounding opinion to have.

It also should be pointed out that "Jay used to be a great stand up comedian" is a pretty major backhanded compliment used to say he is a sell out who isn't funny any more.

It would be like if I said "rogers park bryan used to be a great poster but now he sucks and doesn't say anything interesting".

Why is it dumbfounding? Because you like Carlin and Pryor better than Leno?

I would think Seinfeld knows the business so I wouldn't lose respect for him for thinking that. Maybe RPB can post the link.

Are you suggesting that you are a better judge of standup comedy than Seinfeld?

Past the age of 50 or so, anyone labeling Carlin as "standup comic" doesn't know what they're talking about because his aim wasn't to be funny ... this ground has been covered before ... he was far more insightful than he was funny.

Also, Seinfeld was long rumored to be a potential replacement for Leno, so he has a reason to say nice things about him.

That ship has sailed though unless Fallon bombs.

I believe some of the praise is because of how much turnover there was in Leno's material. Comedians respect that.

I cant speak for Jerry Seinfeld though. I like Carlin better.

And before some dumbass starts making things up I didn't say, I'll clarify for those that need it that I'm not saying I find Leno more entertaining or funny than Carlin. I was simply putting Carlin in the appropriate "light" which is to say he wasn't just some standup comic you went to see at Zanies anymore after a certain time period.

Are you really suggesting satirists don't aim to be funny?

And yes, if Seinfeld truly believes that Leno is the best standup comic of all time, then he is a terrible judge of comedy.

I can agree with that, however, I would re-classify the observations as being that he was a forerunner of a game-change in the medium.

By your definition, Joe Rogan and Dennis Leary would not be considered "standup comics".

Rogan is not good on stage. Better at podcasting.

Leary is a Bill Hicks Tribute act
