I haven't listened to Rome in three years or so. If you think it's good now, you should have been listening ten years ago or more. The emails he would read and calls he would take would never fly today. There's a site that has archives of a lot of it and all the old smack offs.

Emails about Benito Santiago's face that were sent by cinnamon toast still make me smile.

Mac's just jealous. Mac probably fancies himself as someone who does it the right way in radio. He didn't have to resort to a gimmicky act to make himself popular. I bet Mac sees Rome as a bit of a hack. He resents the guy's success.

However, past that point, though, it's not art anymore, it's bullshit trying to pretend to be special by giving shit to the person saying the emperor has no talent instead of presenting why it's art. Bill Conlin, a sports columnist for The Daily News in Philadelphia who was honored by the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2011 but who left his job later that year amid a storm of publicity over child-molestation accusations, died on Thursday in Largo, Fla. He was 79.
His death was confirmed by his friend William Earley, who said Mr. Conlin had been in poor health for some time.
A bearded, boisterous figure, Mr. Conlin was known to a national audience of sports fans through his frequent appearances on the ESPN program “The Sports Reporters.” He joined The Daily News in 1965 and wrote about sports for the paper for more than 45 years. He became a columnist in 1987 and was noted for his baseball writing and his irreverence. (In many columns he used the phrase “When I’m king of the world,” followed by other monarchical proclamations.)

That never happened; unfortunately, all the allegations just hung out there and were never proven or disproven.”
William Conlin was born in Philadelphia and raised in Brooklyn. An accomplished swimmer and rower, he married Irma Steelman in 1960 and graduated from Temple University in 1961. He worked for The Evening Bulletin in Philadelphia before he started at The Daily News.
He is survived by a daughter, Kimberly McCall; two sons, Pete Conlin and William Conlin III; and two grandchildren. His wife died in 2009.
Mr. Conlin addressed the reluctance of would-be whistle-blowers in child-abuse cases in a November 2011 column about the Penn State scandal. “Everybody says he will do the right thing,” Mr. Conlin wrote. “But the moment itself has a cruel way of suspending our fearless intentions.”

Rome is as real as a 3 dollar bill. His show is oriented to those with attention deficiency. What I will give him credit for is his one-minute CBS radio opinions, they are the essence of what the spot should be about. But he is all over the map and inevitably contradicts himself in a short period of time. Years ago he did a show with Wallace Matthews of the New York Daily News, and Matthews hung in there for about 8 weeks before bailing because of Rome's idiocy.

Jim Everett should have punched Rome as soon as the red light on the cameras went off, that way Rome's bitch ass would have had to go to the legal courts as opposed to the court of opinion to make his case. The video clip that is in this thread was showing Everett having to take another 7-step drop to throw in an obvious passing situation. Today there are rules to protect a QB from getting a blow to the head (Everett suffered a concussion that game) and we know that 7-step drops are not how offenses protect their QB.

As for Larry Holmes, when he stops adding the nicknames and pet names to his friends I'll address him correctly.

The attention deficiency thing makes absolutely no sense either. Im not sure where you pulled that out of (unless you're talking about his tv shows) his radio show is anything but ADHD radio.

The song "Michael's Dad" has to be one of the funniest things ever to happen on radio.

If Everett were playing in today's game he could have just thrown the ball away, as the rules for intentional grounding have made it almost a non-call. Throwing the ball away (today) takes as much guts as not wanting to get decapitated.

My experiences with Rome was when he was on the radio (L.A.) and his first foray into TV. That he is not "real" or not genuine is the point I'm trying to make. Listening and enjoying a phony requires a limited attention span, a very limited attention span.
