Dan was denying the existence of any current culture because we are all from somewhere else at some point in our genealogy. He thought it was still 1682 and we were separate settlements of ethnic origin.

Ken, we just don't understand with our public university educations.

Dan Bernstine is obviously the final arbiter of what constitutes American culture! If you understand that, it makes perfect sense!

i do this from time to time. i make people define things all the time while already knowing the normal definition. Because people sometimes are really dumb (i'm sometimes the dumb one) and i want to make sure we are talking about the same thing.

the guy himself defined american culture as.....wait for it ....speaking English. thats is. his words.

as douchey as Dan is and as douchey as he portrays his position, i don't have a problem with his line of questions/comments.

He didn't define it as that. He started his answer with that and Dan wouldn't accept it. He kept asking him "Why?".

If Dan doesn't accept that English is a significant part of American culture, there's really nowhere to go from there.

No, just that English isn't necessarily part of American culture.

I've met people who worked their asses off their whole lives who could barely speak a sentence in English after 40 or 50 years in this country. I don't know how they got by.

Jerry Reinsdorf let them manage the White Sox.

Good to hear Terry say that he really doesn't give a shit when addicts OD.

I'm sure Danny Mac would be tickled pink to hear that.

Let's hope his wife starts catering AA fundraisers so he'll start calling addiction a disease.

I think people had a problem with the song chosen. It doesn't matter why. Someone said or alluded to remaking the Want to Buy the World a Coke. I figure that is what they wanted to show was a melting pot thing. I haven't seen it but heard it.

That aside, Danny will always have this show/argument/narrative whenever some hint of American Exceptionalism shows. He is anti military, anti patriotic etc. and all people that are like that are jingoistic meatballs.

Its the neo-liberal really smart way to be. And in that statement I am not condemning run of the mill liberal folks.

At least he's consistent in this particular form of douchebaggary.

I just listened to the podcast. He merely seems dismissive about the Phillip Seymour Hoffman but was balls-to-the-wall furious over people being sad when Whitney Houston croaked. I wonder what the difference could possibly be...?

And if we're being logically consistent to a fault over what constitutes a "tragedy" here, I may as well point out that Phillip Seymour Hoffman dying is a far, far greater tragedy than the starving kids Dan deemed more worthy of his pity. Hoffman was a known commodity and made many financiers slightly wealthier via his performances in feature films. How much of a ROI are you going to get out of those Christian Children's Fund kids? That's the real tragedy here.

And yes, I know I'm being obtuse.

I wonder if the English get burned up about changing the words to God Save The Queen to Let Freedom Ring?
