At first listen, people loved the fact he sounded like a younger, more "today" version of Doug Buffone.
It looks like somewhere along the way after maybe too much patronizing from Bernstein, the tide has turned on the Bald headed, goatee wearing ( Member # 4,388,076 in THAT club) Mat Bowen.

What say you?

There's only room for one "Mat" in my life, and that's legendary Brewers superprospect "Mat Gamel" (oh how i rue the day i didnt buy one of those Mat Gamel shirts that millerparkdrunk.com pressed up a few years back)

shit, didn't Mat Gamel end up a Cub after the Brewers let him loose?

Haven't liked him since day one. He has a terrible radio voice, talks too fast & has poor diction. Very similar to Brian Urlacher.

I'm a fan. He serves a niche need, which is why i can understand how he alienates listeners if he's in hardcore analysis mode for longer than a couple segments. For me I like that stuff which is why I like him. His voice may sound like Buffone but that's where any comparison stops.

I get the feeling he is a good guy like Buffone as well.

I like Bowen. I don't want to listen to him all the time but I like what he provides.

they have him on too much. plus he is nowhere near as interesting as Doug Buffone. I mean, you couldn't find two people futher apart on the interestingness continuum.

Bowen is good. The only complaint I have is that he seems to use terminology as a crutch at times when he doesn't really have a great answer. He has good content a lot of the time. Sometimes though it seems like he states the obvious with terms that are different than how we would describe it.

yeah, he doesn't really make the x's and o's pop at all. but maybe you just can't or else you sound like chucky or jaws. i also diagnose him with matt millen syndrome sometimes. a guy who was meh/bad in the league trying to educate me about the league.

This. Buffone is the funniest guy on the Score. Bowen is... not.

Bowen, while he was a tremendous athlete in the Glen Ellyn area, wasn't exactly an All-Pro in the NFL. He has that tough guy meathead thing going. Does anyone remember when he supported Greg Williams when the guy was suspended by the NFL for bountygate?

He certainly knows enough about football and the schemes. But I don't know that he is particularly entertaining as Doug Buffone or even as informative as Hub Arkush.

Do we need this guy on the radio? Seriously, is there some percentage of fandom that clamors for this clod?

I will never dislike someone as much as I do Larry, or so I thought...I really think Bowen might be the most confusing expert/analyst I have ever heard. He's awful. He says the same thing again and again and again....he stinks!

Bowen needs a white board, the radio thing for him is good and he has some good stories but he loves tossing out NFL signal calls as if we all know them...and thus he is a better white board guy.

This thread is pretty spot on. Bowen is not dumb by any means. He over articulates points. Radio as BF said is the wrong format. A webcast would be better for him. It is rather boring radio, which is better than the nausea induced stroking if Len Kasper while trying to be an equal from Bernsie I heard today. Players names. Meh they don't care why should you.

It seems like his goal is to make football seem far more complicated than it actually is. Though I do wonder if he has commented on their drafting of Amos, the child raper who scouts seemed to think was incapable of making a play, but ran a 4.3 something at the combine. Bowen thinks Sean Taylor was the best ever and he only ran a 4.5.

He's convincing as a expert when it comes to talking about defense, and defensive backs, particularly safeties, playing in a four-three defense. He uses terminology, and lingo, and almost always injects the type of defensive pass coverage. So no, no backlash there.

Anything else about the game of football and he comes back down to mere mortal status. Does my not listening to him when he comes on reflect a backlash?

With myself being a Lyons Township grad, and Bowen a Glenbard West grad, it is my duty
to dislike him, and uphold the honor of a former Lyons Township Athlete!
