Of course, it's a completely different medium and a completely different experience. At home, it's just another television show.

Although, with the growth of TV screens its getting closer. Tony Soprano's home theater would suffice.

It's ok, but for most movies the people seem to be more of an annoyance than a benefit.

It's about more than the abomination of trimming film to fit a TV screen though. There's the matter of a shared experience with fellow human beings. It's like saying I love cocktail parties but I hate the hassle of driving to them so I attend via Skype.

You seem to enjoy being around people you don't know and won't ever talk to far more than most.

You go to a cocktail party to meet people and see people you know.

I don't think I've ever made a friend at a movie theater.

You go to a movie theater to watch a film in a format the director intended along with others who are having exactly the same experience. I realize it's more convenient for you to be able to hit pause to go grab a cup of coffee, but you're not really watching a movie. You're watching a facsimile of a movie. I don't think anyone who cares about movies, i.e. fans of movies, would argue this with me.

It sounds like you just made that up. Directors intend for you to watch it any way you want. That is why they have extended versions and sell movies and put them on movie channels.

Do you know what you're talking about? Often Directors are beside themselves about what is done to their movies by money guys. In some cases a "Director's Cut" is simply a restoration of a director's original vision. Anyway, there's a discussion to be had there about the uneasy alliance between commerce and art.

You like watching television. It's nothing to be embarrassed about.

Yes, the blu-ray version is closer to the "director's original vision".

Any director, and I doubt there are any of these, that would be upset that you watched their movie at home is an idiot.

I've worked with a few directors, small-time guys making nothing films and this couldn't be further from the truth. They obsess on every minute detail.

I can't imagine how nuts the big-time directors must be.

Might I recommend the Bijou on Wells just north of Chicago.

So they'd be upset that I watched their movie on Netflix?

Yes, they would. The ones I've met, anyway.

They're not making a TV show. They are making a feature film. They're artists, not capitalists.

Well, I hope they enjoy me ignoring their "art" then.

Just shoot them, problem solved.

Watching the Red Sox home games during the World Series this year (on TV), it was really cool to see the people from the center-field camera all sitting closely together hanging on every pitch. Same thing with taking in the Ryder Cup and waiting for the wooden scoreboards to be updated. Technology ruins the communal experience. Now this communal experience looks fascinating:

I couldn't do this without feeling like a schmuck. *gently puts down menu* "Yes, I believe I'll have the popcorn." At that point, I'd pretty much have to shell out for them fancy chicken fingers.

I will say, the popcorn does come in a nice bowl with a wide opening so they can apply a more even coating of butter on it.

I think guys like Speilberg and Cameron could probably be considered capitalists. They are not small-time guys doing it on the side purely for "art".

JORR - you go to the movies for the communal experience - but weren't you one of the people complaining about the behavior of movie goers in the thread about somebody getting shot over the cell phone light?

I go to baseball games too. I don't blame the White Sox if some asshole spills a beer on me. You see a lot of live music. Is that the same as watching on Youtube? Hey, guess what? I just caught Zeppelin at Knebworth!

If you don't understand the difference between movies and television I'm not going to explain it to you. I do understand that you're unconcerned with the differences. That's because you're not a fan of movies. And it's fine. No one need be a fan of anything.

You are comparing it to a live show or a live sporting event.

I'm just making sure.

I'll fully admit that the experience is different at a live event where the people involved in the show are actually there. When they are basically showing it on a bigger television in a bigger room it really isn't that much different.

It's actually quite different, as those who really know could tell you much better than I. Otherwise, why waste the time and money to film the way they do when they could just use videotape? I'm not a huge movie aficionado myself, so my take is going to be closer to yours on a personal level.

A better analogy would probably be taking a high fidelity recording and then listening to it through a computer and ear buds and claiming you heard the same thing as a guy who played the song through a McIntosh amp and a set of Klipschorns.

Thanks for all the suggestions, folks.

As an aside, I just viewed Lawrence of Arabia in it's original 70mm last year, and I defy anyone to say that it's the same experience as watching it on TV.

Home theaters are pretty good now too. That's why. That is how things like Game Of Thrones can be movie quality shows while never even being shown in a theater.

If I'm too stupid to tell a difference besides size of the screen then I don't really care either. I'm pretty sure The Amazing Burt Wonderstone experience isn't going to be lost on me because I waited to watch it at home.

No, because the gap there is huge. Laptops aren't designed to give you a quality media experience. Now, some do a good job but ultimately people don't but Macs to listen to music in high quality ways.
