I think you have a strange definition of hard work. It's not about difficult work. It's about putting the time and being smart about it too. Unfortunately, some have more obstacles to overcome.

Right, so its not just hard work. Some of it is environment and opportunity, right?

Opportunity is not equal. It never will be truly equal. But that doesnt mean we cant try and make it as close to equal as possible

I think you should definitely leave something for your kids and help your kids in their early adult years.

It's because I feel that it is my job to give him or her the best possible educational experience. That includes not having to worry about working a part time job or taking on massive student loans.

Hard work will almost certainly improve your situation. It may be slower but people still work themselves up all the time.

Now, as I pointed out before, the minimum wage is at the point now where it is really hard to live on which is why it is unfair and it makes working to improve your situation much harder.

Fine. You want your kid to have an advantage over other kids. I understand the concept. I'm just not sure that's the best societal model we can come up with. And when someone who doesn't have the advantages of your kids sticks a gun in your ribs, that fact becomes abundantly clearer.

Not really. A lot of cases it can, but in a lot of cases people bust their ass and remain in their position.

And how can it improve your situation if you're already working hard? I mean, what happens when you work as hard as you can?

Like you said, Work smarter and shrewder might be better advice

I just think sometimes its bullshit to say "just work harder" because it presumes the people arent working as hard as they can already

Agreed. And when you're working 60 hours to keep the lights on, you dont have much time for schooling or training.

This subject has many tentacles. It gets deeply into class and race in America. And it's about those who have never had to live on the margin standing in judgment of others. For the children of Scorehead and Brick, their shortcut might be free college tuition. For a kid born to a crackhead mom who has never lived in the same apartment for more than eight months, that shortcut might be selling dope. That's hard work.

Parenting is all about giving your kids an advantage. Money is just one way to do it.

Imagine a society where every child at the age of 18 was sent on the street with no money and no help from parents. You think there would be more or less robbery by gunpoint?

i think you could probably always work harder until you get to the point where you're only sleeping like 2hours a night

i normally sleep about 6...i'm sure i could cut that down to 4 or so and get some more work in, paint the house , whatever

problem is your decisions in the first 25% of your life determine what happens in the last 75% of your life. a lot of people make really dumb decisions when they are 14, 16, 18 years old. by the time you're 25 or 30 and on the path to nowhere, hard work isn't going to get you very far.

If only they had parents to make them eat when they were growing up.

Really? Let's break it down. I understand that you want your kid to have an advantage over my kid. You should understand why I want to run your kid over with my car. Is that really the kind of world you want to live in?

Why would you want to murder a child for the crime of having help with their college tuition?

JORR telling us all about his wanting to murder someones kid because they got help with college tuition.

Do you even have kids, JORR?

This is all very Interesting.

He's a child killing machine.

I'd be scared to buy my infant formula or clothes at this point. Wouldn't want JORR to run my 2month old kid over.

  This is first class trolling.

Obviously, some of you aren't capable of having the discussion. And it's always nice when CSFMB elder Dean Spanky chimes in with nothing.

It's hard to discuss something in a serious manner when you start off with proclaiming you want to kill kids.

Or that a parent helping their kids is so very, very wrong.

Speaking in those absolutes i.e. telling me you want to murder my child, isn't the best way to kick off a rolicking discussion.

Besides, I prefer to tall about thia stuff in person. Because you can't hang up on me there.

I'm sure you understand metaphor as well as I do. Though perhaps not. I don't have any kids and I have no idea if you do or not. That's not the point. We're talking about a bigger picture.

Sam Zell said the 1% work harder than everyone else. That's preposterous. If everyone started equally, do you think Sam Zell is particularly capable? He certainly was capable within a social structure that benefited him more than certain others. Capitalists are always spouting about survival of the fittest, yet they define "fittest" only with narrow constraints where they have all advantage. and then there is the middle class who they have fooled.

You want to give your kids an advantage so they can financially and socially strangle other kids. Isn't that right? You break down the world into me and mine vs. you and yours and then express shock when there are people out there who will hit you over the head.

Yeah, you and I can both succeed, sure. But in the big picture, we're all at each other's throats for limited resources. If that's not true, why can't we figure out a way where Scorehead skips Cooper's Hawk once a month and I skip a few Sox games and we feed a few more people?

I think that you are capable of skipping some white sox games.

I don't see where Scorehead has ever shown an appreciation or understanding for the importance of an aesthetic struggle

Short answer? I don't want to.

But if we're talking about making the world a better place, I don't think it can realistically start with Scorehead or you or me. It has to start from the top. We're all taking our cues with regard to consumerism and accumulation from those above us. It's a philosophy that needs to be changed. That's why I find Sam Zell far more objectionable than Scorehead, who I simply find misguided.

Thanks Hatchet. I was just going to ask if Sam Zell indeed had the silver spoon. Is it ok for Jerry Reinsdorf to leave money to his kids as he worked up from a poor Jewish kid in Brooklyn?

The question isn't whether it's okay. But don't sit there and trumpet the foolish lie that the rich are morally better than others by virtue of their wealth which was only acquired via hard work.
