Of course every guy in this thread busts his ass, works 60 hour weeks,yada-yada-yada..

I'm getting a good laugh. Nowadays I'm doing a lot less "work" and getting paid a lot more money. It's nice to coast in your old age & at least I'm being honest.

There is truth in that.

I only personally know one CEO/Owner of a company who is filthy ass stinking rich. He had shit loads of advantages and he also worked his ass off to get where he is.

His dad started a company and proceeded to demand (as he was an old German) that his sons all take different paths to help company. The guy I know had to excel at school and not sure if he did what he wanted to really do. Get a Phd from Harvard as well as MBA. All the while knowing us workers thought he was just having things handed to him. Anyway, years passed and eventually he took over after the old man died.

The company now is public and worth billions due to him and I would say him personally. Of course he never saw his wife or kids as he worked 15 hours and jetted around the globe. They are gone and he sits in his corner office. Is he happy? IDK maybe when he is with some broad or doing something he likes? Did he work his ass off even though he was advantaged... You bet your ass.

This where the conversation really needs to start.

People "should not talk about envy of the 1 percent, they should talk about emulating the 1 percent. The 1 percent work harder, the 1 percent are much bigger factors in all forms of our society."

I'm curious as to which key words you would change to make this agreeable.

I think my position on the subject is eminently clear, but let me address the subject from a more practical standpoint. When you add up all the taxes people have to pay (state and federal income taxes, sale taxes, fees, licenses, fines and on and on) it probably comes close to 60% of one's income. So I understand why someone like Scorehead has the views he does. I don't think anyone is really advocating taking away one of his big screen or not allowing Spaulding's kid to play hockey. So I'm with you up to a point. But suddenly you have people listening to Fox News and then things start to get ugly. In spite of the fact that only a tiny fraction of those taxes goes to help the less fortunate, the middle class begins to blame the poor for all of their woes- real and imagined. The wealthy, who are actually benefiting the most from what Fox and other conservative outlets like to call "confiscatory policies", must be watching this with glee, as it is this slight of hand that keeps the middle class from voting in favor of its own interests.

Knowing the right people is much more important than hard work.

Two things.

First, in the US, we all choose to live under capitalism. Why? Because it works the best of all the options out there. The problems? Capitalism doesn't account for everyone at the top being greedy at the same time. Also, most every popular social option out there has a hierarchy where a small amount of people have a lot and the majority have a little. I believe if the 99%'ers don't like it, they need to find another option. A multitude of cults and religions have started for just this reason. No matter what you do, you still have to pay taxes and live under most of the laws of your government, so you are never really leaving the control of the hierarchy.

Second, hard work is mythical. I am not aware of too many books out there who's main storyline focuses on how to work more than 40 hours a week and be a millionaire. Actually, many failing entrepreneurs go in with this exact mindset. Most books tell you something different. There are A LOT of books on leadership, influencing people, etc. Why? Because that's what the hard work of successful people is. Its improving yourself constantly by reading, self-reflection, relationship building, networking, etc. Not by being the guy who can put widget A into widget B faster and more over a 14 hour work day than anyone else. Look at the seven habits of highly effective people: focus on influence, have goals, don't over-extend yourself, collaboration, communication, cooperation, balance. Nothing in there about working 14 hour days.

You know why I don't acknowledge "the seven habits of highly effective people"? Because when book sales slowed down, he created an eighth. You mean to tell me Covey was holding out a secret habit on us??? He must be the KC Johnson of motivational speakers.

I didn't miss any of your posts. You post apparently here with no self awareness of what you submit, or how you come across.

My impression of you after reading what you have posted for years is the following; you don't appear to give a shit or a fiddler's fuck about your fellow human being. Double that when they are financially poor.

Funny, but kind of true and kind of not. The seven habits are incredibly useful. The eighth one was just really an elaboration on time management and didnt give much volume in my opinion.

Every decent restaurant worker (cook, bus, dishwasher) in the country works their ass off and usually at two restaurants

They work harder than Sam Zell for sure (I know this because they wouldn't have time for interviews)

So Zell is terribly wrong on that

But who coulkd blame him? He lives in a different world than most of us

Very well said and 100% on the money.working hard and the number of hours one works has nothing to do with each other. I have worked for and with guys who work 70 hours a week but couldn't make decisions or get things done. But they think they are working harder than every one else, when in fact they were just inefficient procrastinators.

100% incorrect on both counts. I won't talk about my charitable contributions of both time and money because your mind is made up. My first responsibility is to my Wife, to the Children who we have brought into this world, and to the rest of my Family. Then, I do what I can for others and charities.

I don't give a fiddler's fuck about people who do nothing but bitch and moan and complain about their lot in life and how cruel the world is, while doing absolutely nothing to help better themselves.

I can't be anything other than 100% correct. That's my impression of you based on your own posts. And it's an opinion shared by others.

Secondly, call me unimpressed no matter how much you give to charity. Read the story in the bible, (you did say more than once here that you are a Christian), about the publican and the widow's mite. There is also another one in that book about the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing.

The saddest part of this whole thread is that you have no idea what you are missing out on. That's the real cost of 5 generations of wealth insulating a family from their fellow human being.

Did Sam Zell or Marie Antoinette compare "persecution" of top "1%" American rich to Hitler's atrocities v Jews; ext unfortunate semantics.

The funny thing is that I remember Sam Zell giving interviews 20 years ago (when he really hustled) talking about really enjoying his "down time" and not taking his work home with him. That and his talking about riding his Harley more on increased vacations.

I guess once he moved from exploiting the tax code to the bankruptcy code he became a complete, tireless asshole.

Me? It dawned on me that I've worked 26 days in a row, that my own home needs painting, I have a stack of bills....including some for the common welfare  .... but given that the wife walked in with a fresh bottle of Tequilla, that Muddy Waters is on tv & I've got my first buzz in about two weeks, Sam Zell still thinks I'm a lazy slacker.

Having worked for Sam Zell, I can tell you he is a complete tool. While the company I was working for was already having their troubles, he compounded them. His "double the size of this fucking company, I don't care how" attitude resulted in complete chaos and a revolving door of employment. That said, he has made a lot of money as a scum-sucking landlord.

FYI, this exact reasoning could also be used to explain away all the bad things that happen on Wall Street. If you want to act like it is some great feat that Sam Zell at his current age would be murdered by bigger and stronger men then you should also find it to be some great feat that the guys on Wall Street are able to dominate us in the current system we have.

I absolutely hate that analogy or whatever you even want to call it.

It should be pointed out that Sam Zell came from immigrant parents who were fleeing the nazi's and built virtually his whole life on his own. You may want to save the "survival of the fittest" is gone thing when talking about him.

You're assuming that the young Sam Zell got to where he is based on "hard work" (the fallacy that started this thread) rather than on a chance meeting with Bob Lurie.

It seems like you think everyone who has success simply got lucky.

Sam Zell clearly worked hard. Of course there was luck involved. Everyone has luck involved in everything. It's hard to come up with anything in my life that doesn't have at least something to do with luck.
