Darkside, how long have you been working in HVAC? Was it school and work at the same time? or Was it school, then work?

Only since early 2012. School and work at the same time. Got an apprenticeship about 4 months into my school.

Payne 95% efficient.

Three years running without an issue and my bills are 25-35% lower.

Wow. That's huge savings. Is this typical Darko?

Depends on what you've replaced. Going from a natural draft 70% to a 95% yeah sure maybe.
Going from a 90 to a 95? Maybe not.
Going from an oversized 140k btu to a right sized 100k btu? Sure!
There's a lot to this. NOt just furnace efficiencies.

I recently replaced a 165,000 BTU furnace from 1974, with a 100,000 BTU, 92% efficiency beast.

I'm with you on the multi-stage furnaces. Keep 'em.

Great in concept but I really don't think they work. Most times I change out a multi stage the feedback is that they use more gas.

My HVAC guy says something like this.

Our old one was an 80% something or other.

So if I replace my 22 year old Trane 90%'er with a brand new 90%'er, I should still realize some monthly savings due to improved AFUE, right?

Not really.

For the record AFUE is largely bullshit. You can make a 90% magically a 92% by changing the 200 degree limit to a 160 degree limit. You get an AFUE point or two by adding an extra rollout switch or a blocked vent safety switch. None of this increases efficiency but it increases AFUE.

Thanks. So how do I calculate how many BTU's I need? Is there a per foot calculation or rule of thumb?

Thanks again.

its your square footage+insulation that determines furnace size.

Yes. There is a process called a "Manual J". You can probably download the forms somewhere on the interwebs.
You enter in the dimensions of each room, the fenestration, the insulation levels, the directions the walls face, all kinds of stuff and it calculates heat loss and load.

That's how furnaces ended up getting oversized. Very cavemanny.
