Cops: Off-duty sergeant fatally shoots teen during robbery

A gun pointed at his gut, the off-duty sheriff's sergeant digs through his pockets with his left hand, fumbling for money, as the three robbers surround him at the Far South Side gas station.

The sergeant is surer with his right hand, quickly drawing his own gun and firing point-blank. The gunman, 16, drops at his feet as the two others scatter, according to surveillance video that captured the robbery Monday night at a Citgo station at 103rd Street and Cottage Grove Avenue, across the street from Gately Stadium.

The sergeant swings around at the fleeing robbers, then points the gun down as the gunman struggles to get up. The video shows the sergeant kicking away the robber's gun and then opening the passenger door of his own car, apparently to get his phone.

The 16-year-old was shot in the head and died, according to police. The sergeant was not injured, and police said they were still looking for the two other robbers this morning.

The shooting occurred around 10 p.m. as the sergeant was filling his car at the Citgo station, police said.

The surveillance video shows a man, a gun in his right hand, running up to the sergeant and pointing the gun at him. The sergeant backs way, drops the nozzle and raises his hands, according to the video. Two other men run up and join the gunman, according to the video.

The sergeant appears to hand something over to the gunman, then continues digging through his pockets with his left hand, the video shows. Then the sergeant's right hand quickly swings around and the sergeant fires at the gunman, according to the video.

The Cook County medical examiner's office refused to release any information about the teen.

That is ballsy. Wild West type shit... I would just let them rob me and cancel my credit cards. I dont carry cash anyway.

The kid had a gun drawn on him. I don't get robbing someone of their wallet nowadays. Not a lot of people cary much cash and Credit cards can be quickly cancelled.

Everything is different. The kid was committing a crime with a gun. The cop used necessary force to defend himself. This wasn't anywhere near similar to the Martin case.

Hey, this cop probably started a savings account for his kid or helped with his kids college tuition....he deserved to get shot in the face.

It's illegal to mug somebody. I highly doubt the mugger would have chosen not to use a gun if guns were illegal.

hard to watch a guy dying, but he deserved it. there is no good reason to mug someone. i probably would have shot all of them, but thats why im not a cop. you can tell that sargent was trained, because he shot one defensive round and did NOT shoot at the fleeing suspects. if you tried shooting the runners, you might miss and hit a civilian... but honestly i doubt i would think about that in the moment my life was threatened. and i also probably would have emptied the clip in the guy when i noticed there was still hot air coming out of his mouth.

Its the only reason the kid got shot in the head, but its not the only way this could have went down. Maybe the kid decides to rob a black belt or a marine or ends up getting stabbed.
