First of all I hope he's alright, he was on a cruise

Hawk has been known to call Fregosi "the greatest baseball mind there is"

Who is the greatest baseball mind?

So far in my office we've come up with John Schuerholz (mine), Greg Maddux and Joe Torre

A "great baseball mind" is a paradox. The cool thing about baseball is that nobody can figure it out.

False narrative.

The collective minds of fangraphs and baseball prospectus are the answer, you dumb goober. Fregosi is a mouthbreather, a troglodyte that should be cast into the outer darkness with the detritus of old school baseball minds.

I think you are living too close to I-80, rpb.

:D

Torre, Leyland, La Russa...best managers of the last generation. Leyland should've won with those stacked early 90's Pirate teams and again with the Tigers team of the last decade.

LaRussa would've walked Ortiz in game 2 of the 2013 ALCS with a 4 run lead and two outs in the 8th/4 outs from going up 2-0 against the Red Sox in their own park. LaRussa would've also had a reliable closer, seeing as he pioneered the whole closing pitcher thing, iirc.

LaRussa would be my pick for manager, but Im taking player evaluation into consideration.

I loved LaRussa while he was in St. Louis, but his name should have been removed from the "greatest mind" discussion when he decided to bat the pitcher 8th...on two separate occasions...for a sizable chunk of the season.

I'll have to do some digging but 2002 sticks in my head as one of them...

Off by a few years...

http://bats.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/07/28/tony-la-russa-and-the-logic-behind-the-lineup/?_php=true&_type=blogs&_r=0

Few other managers have adopted La Russa’s strategy, which he used in 1998 and 1999 and resumed extensively in 2007. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, since the start of the 2007 season, La Russa has batted the pitcher eighth in 312 games. Other managers have been nowhere close:

John Russell (50 times)
Ned Yost (42)
Ken Macha (12)
Joe Torre (8)
Bud Black (3)
Bruce Bochy (1)
Trey Hillman (1)
Bob Melvin (1)

I don't remember him doing it that year...if he did it wasn't for a stretch of time...
