Anyone else here this?

Basically, there was always a wedding ring or band, but the Diamond thing came from a deBeers marketing campaign in about 1930, the 2 months salary was part of the campaign, etc.

The power of suggestion!

I saw a video today about it. I don't know enough about it to know if it is accurate or not.

I don't think anyone says anything contrary ... DeBeers entirely contrived the diamond market.

Somewhat lengthy, but fairly thorough.

We used my mom's ring with my wife's grandmother's ring, added some stones and came up with something beautiful for under a grand.

DeBeers can kiss my ass.

Sounds like something that somebody should make a movie about.

Probably some rich people who don't want that movie to be made!

BigFan getting married again? 2 months salary seems a bit ridiculous and inviting theft.

When I proposed (a bit over 25 years ago) I did not fall for that 2 month stuff and neither did my wife. We agreed it was better to not overspend on the ring and instead invest where it made more sense -- on a down payment on a house and a honeymoon.

She has since redone the setting and we are still in the house (since added on to and nearly paid for). Going low key on the ring was absolutely the correct decision. The Big Ring really is a marketing scam.

This should be required reading for all people getting married.

I suppose you could call it Death Diamond or something like that. Since all the blood that has been spilled over it. Maybe a big star can sign on...

What does this even mean? Is it a recipe?
