How about if you're caught driving with no insurance / no license its immediate jail until you bring proof of insurance to the lock up?

The logistics argument is valid but the jobs and taxes they pay would be worked and paid by someone who is here legally (and likely a person currently on unemployment)

Jails are too over crowded for that to happen.

Fine. Then how do you stop an uninsured or unlicensed motorist from driving?

There's really nothing controversial here. Illegal immigrants who commit felonies should be deported

By that statement all illegals would be deported. Coming into the country is a felony as is staying past VISA expiration.

Sneaking across the border is a misdemeanor. If repeated after deportation, it becomes a felony.

Many of them do jobs that we don't want to do even if we are unemployed.

You can't. The fines and penalties are already tough and they still continue to drive. I can't say I blame some of them. They can't afford to pay these fines and the government is always looking for new ways to give you an extremely high ticket.

This is always the worst argument. We don't want to do them because they pay so poorly because of the huge amount of illegal immigrants. These are scary times in the future for a lot of people. Permanent unemployment seems to be on the horizon for many and yet we still let a system operate which allows for American citizens to be undercut by those who shouldn't be allowed here and we keep out those who are willing to try and come here and do it the right way.

One of the worst bits of political idiocy has been how the Democrats have somehow made being against illegal immigration a bad thing. 100% of American citizens should be against illegal immigration. It shouldn't even be an argument. It only hurts our country. It does not help it at all and it creates situations like Bryan's family has to now deal with. It's also used as a tool of the rich to keep the rest of the country down. That's ultimately what keeps true logical reform from happening, along with the politicization of an issue that realistically shouldn't be politicized.

That's all great in theory. But the reality is there are "illegal" immigrants in the U.S. that were brought here by their parents, some of whom don't speak any language other than English and know nothing but this country. Too often the conversation on "illegal" immigration turns into an attack on people, people who simply wanted the opportunity for a better life. The real irony here is that those are the people who still believe in the American Dream.

So? With any true immigration reform, there would have to be some sort of program for people like that because of the failings of the current system to prevent things like that.

Everyone wants a better life. Everyone. We can't ignore damaging behavior because of it.

Who do you think a man coming to the U.S. and working his ass off is damaging? Do you think an arbitrary law meant only to serve the children of previous immigrants should trump the basic human right of a man to better his situation?

I didn't say this. I said illegal immigration is damaging. It inarguably is. Immigration is not.

Yes. Of course it should. Every country should have the right to choose who can and cannot enter and live in it. I believe countries have a right to set immigration policies. I bet you do too.

Ive never really understood this. Do we think if the immigrants were gone, these jobs would go undone?

Of course they wouldnt. I dont know about you, but Im not really above any kind of work if its a choice between working and not.

So because he works hard, we should ignore the immigration laws?

Are you saying the process of becoming legal somehow alienates human rights?

We as Americans are over regulated. If you want to come here and pursue the American dream, we need you to get legal, so you can be over regulated like the rest of us.

I dont understand why some people seemingly support special treatment for illegal immigrants. I have to pay fees and jump thru all sorts of hoops to make sure I can work and drive to work legally. Why does the immigrant not have to? And why am I somehow a villian for wanting him to?

I'm saying I don't blame anyone for trying to make a better life for themselves. There are plenty of laws you would break in the interests of your family.

Besides that, "illegal" immigration isn't a huge problem. It's a red herring. Another group of people the wealthy can fool the middle class into believing is the source of all their misery. Misdirection. Like magic. Pay no attention to the real problems.

Robust immigration only makes a nation healthier. Xenophobia has almost finished destroying Japan's economy.

Right. And if I was caught, id pay the price.

Just because there are bigger issues doesnt mean its not a big problem. If unemployment is a big problem in this country (obviously it is) then illegal immigration is a big problem.

Illegal immigration is a big problem. It also has little to no benefit to society(besides throwing the wages scale off significantly for the benefit of the rich). Let me be clear here, I am only referring to illegal immigration.
Joe Orr Road Rod wrote:

You keep on switching back and forth here. Keep the topic on illegal immigration. Immigration is good. Illegal immigration is not.

No, Rick, you only see the world through the prism of laws that one human being created to give himself an advantage over another human being. I'm not sure why you can never get beyond that. Immigration is immigration. The "legality" of it is arbitrary. But hell, you're here, you went to Purdue, you've got a good job. Shut the fuckin' door!
