As to the border. Yeah we should be able to control it but we are not and it is at the Federal level. States have tried and either they got struck down in The judicial system or the DOJ comes after them. Arizona is a perfect example.

1986 was a compromise deal. We gave all the illegals here immunity and gave them green cards. The rest of the legislation was never enforced mostly because Congress refused to fund it,guess who generally has had control of Congress from that time forward?

I had an uncle that was a dish washer. He was mentally challenged and he was very proud to be owning a pay check and buying his own things. I guess in todays world, you guys would just be happy putting these people on public aid and give them free cell phones.

What's the "correct way?" I would hazard a guess that the immigration laws made it easier for our relatives to immigrate vs. what a Mexican would have to do to immigrate legally today. My grandfather certainly had no job upon his arrival to the US.

Who can fault Mexicans for wanting to come here, even if illegally, to better their lives? For many of them their situation in Mexico is pretty hopeless.

It is a difficult problem.

Here's one idea that would kill two birds with one stone: Our prisons are jammed full and we have the dilemma of hard-working, but illegal, Mexican immigrants.

What we ought to do is strip all imprisoned drug felons of their citizenship, airlift them to Michoacán and leave them there to fend for themselves. Then give those peoples' SS#s to law-abiding, working Mexican immigrants.

Doing so would help us upgrade the quality of our citizenry while at the same time save us big prison $$.

No one required my grandparents to learn English. They learned it anyway, just like many immigrants do today. However they spoke German at home until the day they died. I really don't think the US Government needs to be mandating what language people learn.

Nope do not think so. Even if what I really want,ie kicking them all out. It will not happen for several reason. So you need to compromise. You must give in a little to get some of what you want. In the real world that is how things are done. Congress needs a refresher course,esp The Heads of the parties. They have over the past 12-15 years lost the ability. Things are too confrontational.
Nobody wants to work things out. One thing that needs to be done is securing the border. We can not keep going through this every 10-20 years.
Retrad Maybe I do not know but when my grandparents who came over passed away they all spoke very good English. Now you have people who have been here for over 5 years and they still have a very limited grasp of the language.

Why do you think our grandparents learned English? It was because they where forced too. No one coddled them and printed govt forms in German or when they called into a company did not have a press 1 for English,or 5 for German.
