He said 6th and 8th fret...so I assume the E shape moves up accordingly, which puts the root at the 4th and 6th frets....which is Ab and Bb.

or it's root at the 6th and 8th, which would make it Bb and C.

or...it's the E shape starting on the low E string at the 6th and 8th frets...which would make it a Eb and F.

For the record these are handy reggae chords. If you can upstroke these effectively they sound nice, though I recommend killing the open strings or finding a good way to muff them which is very hard.

I started on bass, and am a lot better on bass than guitar, but you could pick it up pretty easily. Learn C, G, E, D, F, A and you can literally play hundreds of songs. You could master each one of those chords in an hour since your hands are already trained to play.

I wasted a lot of time studying and practice proper chords when I started. Then I looked at some tab books of songs to try. None of those fuckers really play proper chords seems to me.

The biggest thing with any instrument is just practicing and learning a little music theory like scales always helps (tab is more helpful than sheet music for guitar and bass). Different people have different goals as well. Some people just want to jam with their buddies cover band and others prefer home recording and writing and recording their own songs. I think some people believe that you're either born with musical talent or you can't do it all. Obviously some people just pick it up like it they were made to play an instrument. But I think other people don't have natural talent, but with practice can improve more than people who don't practice.

in summary: practice is good unless you suck at practicing.

One must develop finger and hand strength first. speed and dexterity will naturally follow. if you run scales all day long, your chord fingering and transitions will be faster and smoother. If you practice chords and strumming all day long, then you are on your way to becoming a dirty patchouli drenched singer-songwriter nu-hippie who writes songs about struggle of domesticated cats.

With that E shape you can also copy an E minor position for the minor chords in the key of E. That way you can use F#m G#m C#m and not just your E A B. Throwing in the minor chords can give you some more options in your chord progressions.
