Bernstein: Russia’s Hockey Failure Is Delicious

(CBS) That was the gold medal game, and we won.
It doesn’t matter who actually finishes where, now, or which anthem gets played at the end — the Americans’, the Canadians’, whatever. I’m not waving any flags. Going into these Olympics, all I wanted was for the Russian men’s hockey team to lose and for their despotic, bigoted president to be internationally embarrassed.
Kiitos, Suomi. Onnittelu.
Vladimir Putin himself made it clear that this would be his nationalistic showcase, the event of the events, with the former KGB lieutenant colonel expressing in certain terms that the team was a direct representation of the interests of the Kremlin and the country. This was to be a symbolic reaffirmation of Russian power, on home ice.
He has wielded his own influence in the unprecedented expenditure on these Sochi games amid allegations of deep and widespread corruption and the deaths of construction workers, and in oppressive policies discriminating against the LGBT community. Putin, always one to butch himself up by waving guns and riding horses, hitched himself to hockey for his man’s-man moment of rough toughness.
And the Finns just gelded him.
The style of Finland’s 3-1 quarterfinal win on Wednesday was particularly satisfying, too. Even after Ilya Kovalchuk scored eight minutes in, Finland continued to play its intelligent, opportunistic game, countering superior overall skill. Juhamatti Aaltonen scored, then captain Teemu Salanne did. Then it was Mikael Granlund with a power-play goal, and the nervous silence in the Bolshoy Ice Dome. Over the final 35 minutes, Finland’s deliberate neutral-zone traps, dedicated shotblocking by defensemen and Tuukka Rask’s precise positional goaltending slowly squeezed the life out of a team carrying an immense political burden.
Semyon Varlamov surrendered all three goals, and he was pulled midway through the second period, adding some butter-cream frosting atop this delectable cake of schadenfreude. Varlamov is the guy accused of stomping on his girlfriend’s chest, dragging her around by her hair and telling her he’d beat her worse if they were back home in Russia instead of in Denver. Prosecutors dropped charges after weighing evidence but insisted that they believed the victim’s claims. So have a nice day, dude.
Pavel Datsyuk also has a problem with gay people, it seems. Any distress for him is fine, also.
Others are reveling in this result, enjoying the emblematic defeat. Patrick Burke is the president of the You Can Play Project, which has organized and educated sports across amateur and professional levels to eagerly accept gay athletes. His tweets included:

I haven’t had any rooting interest in any of this outside of this team in this event, only wanting the Russians to come up with something other than the gold medal sought by a bad guy. Even a loss in the championship game would have sufficed.
But this is even better, with catcalls rained down on them by home fans with enough energy to muster up such disdain, and the rest of them ashen-faced and sullen. No medal, no shot at one and no chance to fly a proud banner of old prejudice.

Isn't this pretty much the same as Michigan State saving Detroit and the Saints saving New Orleans. It's just the opposite in that the hockey team losing ruined Russia? Fucking guy

Russia losing is not going to be of any benefit to gay people. In fact the loss will probably make it worse for them as people look for someone to blame. Bernstein has single handly made it it worse for them. He.should.be.brought.up.before.a.tri.-bu.-nal.on.war.crimes.charges.

The Finns sat on a lead and played not to lose for more than half the game. Then when the play was in their end, they went into a defensive shell and blocked all the shooting lanes. This allowed the goalie to face mostly low-percentage shots and stop what few shots didn't hit guys wearing lots of body armor. Then time ran out and they won. Russia doesn't like homosexuals.

Psychological issue #2: Stockholm Syndrome. I can't tell you how many Olympic newscasts on state-owned Channel One have begun with a rundown of what the Western press thinks about Russia. What did the Western press think about the opening ceremony? What nice things did the Western press say about the Sochi Olympics facilities? About our stupendous athletes?

I'm sorry, are you not a resurgent superpower, the country of Gagarin and Dostoyevsky? Why do you care about what the corrupt West thinks about you if you are? But the Russians care. Oh, they care so much. Moscow's biggest radio station has a show that airs on weekend evenings called "Cover Story," an entire hour dedicated to what the Western press writes about Russia. Russia's state-owned news agency RIA Novosti has an entire outlet dedicated to translating Western coverage of Russia. It's not the only such outlet here. Russia Today famously obsesses over how Russia is covered in the West. (In fact, my recent story about Western journalists swarming the one gay club in Sochi merited a mention on RT as proof that Western journalists are just nefarious and unprofessional shills, trying to make Russia look bad. Which, needless to say, was not the point of my story.)

The Russians, however, are shocked to discover that Russia no longer occupies a similar amount of disk space in the American imagination. Which only fuels the curiosity about what we're saying.

Before you say that the Russians are commendably more aware of the world around them than the ocean-sheltered, solipsistic Americans—they're not. It's not the world that they're curious about. They're curious about what the world is saying about them.

Psychological issue #3: inferiority complex. Also, note that I've been saying "Western" rather than "international" press. The Russians couldn't care less what the Indian or Chinese papers are writing. Russia's centuries-old internal debate about whether it is East or West today manifests itself as a militant insistence on its European-ness. This or that building is "European." This or that import is luxe and coveted because it's "European." I once saw Vladimir Putin at an investor conference launch into a long tirade about how very European Russia is—exactly the kind of ranting you'd never hear in, say, France. This is in part why Russia has a hard time dealing with the Chinese or the Japanese: it sees them as Asian and therefore somehow inferior, as less prestigious international partners than those tiny countries to the West.

Which are at the same time infecting it with their perverted social norms like homosexuality. (Psychological issue #4: schizophrenia.)

Psychological issue #5: not understanding consequences. Russia has taken a strong position on the world stage. It has done some pretty controversial things: It has banned adoptions of Russian orphans by Americans, it has passed anti-gay legislation, it has imprisoned three stupid young women for dancing in a church, it has given refuge to Edward Snowden, yet expects the Americans to send Barack Obama to the opening of the Olympics and expects the world to speak admiringly of its historical grandeur and its might. Under Vladimir Putin, Russia has decided to be feared but it also wants badly to be loved, and it can't understand why, while it is walking around kicking shit and giving everyone the finger, the world isn't showering it with kisses.
