Gents,

Just go buy a sump pump tomorrow or tonight. Just do it. Go for the cast Iron casing, oil filled. You'll spend more but it will last longer. It's probably a 1 1/2" discharge or 2" depending on the model, so get the male adapter while you're at it. Get a check valve too.
We're talking less than $150 investment here.

Basically your sump pump is going to go out. And probably at 2am. So it's better to have one ready now. If it sits on your shelf til next spring that's cool. At least you're ready.

By the way, I meant to ask, about a year ago, they put in a new heater and air conditioner. He told me I needed to buy a service plan for it where they come in the spring and the fall to "service it". Is that real?

I don't really care about it lasting 20 years. I won't be here even close to that long.

I have one. It covers time &labor for the furnace plus one cleaning for 160 bucks.

i think it's worth it.

If the AC was properly charged, you're good for probably 4-5 years without maintenance unless you live around a lot of cottonwood trees. The most important thing to do in those first 5 years is to clean out the coils in the outdoor unit. If you've got a 5/16 nut driver you can pop off the top and pull spray your hose along the coils from the inside out. Other than that your charge, compressor, contactor, capacitor and fan should all be fine without maintenance.
The furnace should be good for 4-5 years too, but I'd recommend cleaning the flame sensor every other year at minimum. It
s a rod that sits in front of one of the burners in the path of the flame... usually secured with a 1/4 in screw. You take it out, clean it real good with a scotch brite pad and replace it. Around year 6 your might be needing a new ignitor.

Then around year 3 start getting regular maintenance done. It's worth it spotting problems before they become outages.
Course, there's still the possibility of outages, but they're less likely.

no plumbing & AC is extra for a plan (80 bucks,I think)

My furnace is like 15 years old (I think) and never have had any issues I can remember.

Sounds like it's time for a switch. We do furnace AND ac for $168. That's a full inspection on both, once a year each. On top of that we give 15% discounts on all ac, heating, plumbing and electrical repairs or projects.

Interesting. Well, we do service that area. If you ever want to give us a shot let me know. We do an awful lot more on Clean and Checks that everyone else... combustion analysis, airflow analysis, safety checks, CO checks... we don't just run a vacuum over your furnace.

You ever cum out to the Lockport area?

I have one locked and loaded. The PVC and male adapter are already glued and connected. In case of pump failure, all I have to do is:

1) Unplug the old pump
2) Disconnect the old pvc from the check valve, by loosening two screws.
3) Remove the old pump from the well
4) Place the new pump in the well
5) Connect the check valve to the pvc on the new pump
6) Tighten two screws on the check valve
7) Plug in the new pump

These seven steps shouldn't take more than 90 seconds.
