Shit, that would be fucked-up, but maybe he blew Ledoux's brains out before he could put a visual on him and ID him to Rust? I have to re-watch, damn. Fucking Comcast doesn't let you fast fwd On Demand stuff any longer.

There's no way Hart is the killer. The dummy couldn't even keep his glorious side piece secret.

Yea wasn't that the whole m-theory, that the killings will keep happening and there will be more detectives to stop them? Also, the writer said when he talks about the metaphysical that the show may be referring to the audience watching television. McConaughey did just dress as a priest in Dallas Buyers Club.

That's interesting. This show is very meta already what with the in-joke of Woody and another man's lawn. The viewer is clearly standing outside the dimension that the characters inhabit. There's the flat circle. And we, the viewers, have been sucked in by the first act so that we may go insane by viewing the second just like in The King in Yellow.

Pizzolatto has actually had a couple interviews where he's said as much.
Quote:
"Now, think about all the things Cohle is talking about," he said as he finished chewing. "Is he a man railing against an uncaring god? Or is he a character in a TV show railing against his audience? Aren't we the creatures of that higher dimension? The creatures who can see the totality of his world? After all, we get to see all eight episodes of his life. On a flat screen. And we can watch him live that same life over and over again, the exact same way."

I met with two of Dr. Ken Jr.'s teachers today in this little room at the school that was an exact replica of the 2012 interview rooms.

I could barely stop myself from tapping my middle finger on the table and insisting one of them run out and get me a 6-pack of Lone Star while I whipped out a knife and recreated a rape scene.

I really had a hard time not telling them that I drink at 10am on Wednesdays and they don't get to interrupt that and hoping they watched the show but I held back.

The grandpa is an interesting angle. No chance Marty is the killer. As others said, it just wouldn't make sense given what we know about his personality. The drawing in his house is the biggest clue that something happened to his daughter that directly involves the Yellow King, and it just wouldn't make sense if it was Marty. So that probably leaves the grandpa.

As others have said, I think it's fairly obvious that Rust has been working the case this whole time. I don't even think that's a theory. I think it's clear.

Up until this point it's really been a police procedural. I think that's over now.

"The very banality and innocence of the first act only allowed the blow to fall afterward with more awful effect."

I doubt anyone can really see what's coming. This isn't a whodunit.

Is this the wife's father we are speaking about? The guy we hear on the phone when Marty gets caught cheatin'?

Yes. The guy Marty argued with while the girls were in the boat and then they left.

I like this show but man it has quickly spawned perhaps the most deranged and annoying fanbase. Just reading some things on reddit and imdb from these rabid dogs leaves me dumbfounded by how easily impressed people can be by philosophical ideas most people study when they are undergrads. And this horseshit about it being one of the all-time great tv shows after four episodes? Yeah, rein in on the hyperbole and superlatives, chief. Let the season finish before we evaluate it.

After the first episode I thought the show was going supernatural. Then it kind of didn't but now it's getting back to that. Rust talking about repeating your life over and over reminded me of Roland in Stephen King's Dark Tower. I think Rust and Marty are still working the case like was said above. They got too close to figuring something out and it involved people in power like that politician from earlier. So Marty took the hint when he was threatened and shut up and went back to a normal life while Rust used his survivalist skills and dropped off the radar while continuing to build evidence.

Did they ever say what happened to that Ginger dude? He was taped up in Rust's truck when they killed those two guys and then we never hear from him again.

Rust told Marty he dumped him in a ditch.

That may be, but rarely is there a show so literary on television. Maybe the NFL on CBS.

I suspect it still might.

Watched the first episode again and it certainly seems like the Rev. Tuttle is up to something. I think that nearly silent police captain (or whatever his rank is) tipped Tuttle off to Rust's digging a bit too deep in those "Report Made in Error" things in order to get that anti-Christian task force assigned to the case.

Also, now that this King in Yellow stuff is being brought to the forefront the show seems to suggest that Hart is tied to it as pretty much every time he was in a scene (in the first episode at least) he was surrounded by yellow.

I haven't been this excited about a TV show since Breaking Bad first came on the air.

I think this writer has gotten a big taste of success for the first time in his life and now is injecting insights he never originally intended. I don't believe for a second that he wrote the show with intending for Cohle to break the 4th wall with consciousness that he is just a character in a TV show.

Also, this thing was written several years before the Dallas Buyers Club, which is hardly Mc Conahey's greatest commercial success. If Pizzolato wanted to drive home the point he would have had the guy say "I 've seen you before. You're the guy who likes teenage poon and drugs...all dazed and confused."

I do admit it is a cool theory though...that the character and the person playing the character exist exclusive of one another but for a chance "possession" by one of the other for a brief period of time that neither is aware of.

MM exists in a real world. Cohle exists in a real world. They currently cohabitate both physically and in existence. However there are metaphysical creatures like Ledoux (or the actor who plays Ledoux) who are aware of both the actor and the character. Kind of like in Quantum Leap where the evil force was following Beckett from leap to leap.

Watched the most recent episode again last night and picked up on all the talk about black stars that I
had been reading about. I saw the shot where Cohle is driving with Ginger in the back and as he makes
a turn there is a huge yellow crown in the background ( a road sign ). The girls playing with the crown
in the front yard that gets tossed into the tree. I even noticed that after Marty slaps his daughter and his
wife goes back to talk to her, when she closes the door of the younger daugher there is a black star on
it. Weird. I am trying not to dig too deeply into theories, just kinda letting it unfold before me. I have
no clue where the next episode will take us. Hard to believe this will wrap up in just 3 more.

Re-watched 1 and 2 last night. There are a lot of references to future happenings in the early interviews. What I found most interesting is the first 10 seconds of episode 1. In it, two men are walking out of a field at night, and they appear to be Rust and Marty. Then you hear a lighter go off and see a field burning.

I still have no clue what is going on.

He's with that Russian dude from The Pine Barrens episode of The Sopranos. They're going to be in an HBO spinoff called "Whatever Happened to Those 2 Jagoffs?" (working title)

True. But what about Woody's "you don't mow another guy's lawn" thing. That had to be intentional. That's too specific.

but that is just a writer's homage

The thing that Joe and other's have described is Rust actually aware that his world is nothing more than TV and that he exists as some kind of entity outside of Matthew Mc Conaghey the actor. It just happens that MM is currently embodying Rust. That, of course, could be one giant reference to EdTV but that would be a truly stupid movie to reference.

OK. I don't think it goes that far but I do think the writer intends for the audience to consider Rust's flat circle philosophy and how it relates to the viewing of the show itself.

But, I don't think it is intended that Rust is aware in the way that JORR is describing although it's a pretty interesting take.
