Instead of purchasing a TAB book, try this:

They are not always perfect, but they are pretty close more often than not.

With that E shape you can also copy an E minor position for the minor chords in the key of E. That way you can use F#m G#m C#m and not just your E A B. Throwing in the minor chords can give you some more options in your chord progressions.

I really should get a music theory book or take a class on it.This shit would make a lot more sense to a 3 chords and a cloud of dust picker like me.

Rouge I think in Chicago you would find someone to give you like three lessons to pick up tab then you are off.

I can read tab just fine but I have zero clue on how notes / chords relate to each other

They have charts online and in books that tell you what chords go together in each key. There are 8 notes in one octave of the major scale, but typically 6 chords that people use. Your E A B is the I IV V. Understanding the numbers helps because that will help you transpose the pattern into a different key. For example a very popular pattern in a ton of pop songs is I V VI IV.

E B C#m A
F C Dm Bb
G D Em C
A E F#m D
C G Am F
D A Bm G

Consult this:
http://www.guitar-chord.org/key-and-chord-chart.html

Keys are very important, but especially for singing. In fact in certain pop songs they throw in a key change up a full step (2 notes up the scale) toward the end of the song on a chorus typically. If you don't sing or work with a singer then you will likely never have to change the key.
