I am looking at the One Step Poker tourney and while I dont expect it to be a windfall, but its a seat at the WSOP and then a prize package to everyone at the winning table?

For $275, it just seems a little light?

Now, if thats all Db can muster up, OK, thats understandable, but I have been to a number of these events and there is always silent auctions, regular auctions, prizes for first knockout, or like at Brian Campbells, every table had a Hawk and if you knock them out you got the jersey of that player, right off the back. I think we all know DB can come up with some other items.

I guess for Bernsteins own charity though, he cant make a call to get a few things. However, when he wants seats on the glass or locker room passes for his kids, he knows who to call. or go to a NU game and get jerseys from the AD, etc. He sure knows who to call to take care of himself.

Why not even ask for $400 a seat and say they can sit with him and knock him out?

Just see a guy begging for a charity to make him look good, without putting in the effort he could. Just the time he has taken on radio the past 2 weeks asking people to sign up, he could get creative and sell spots, $500 gets you a seat a promo of your business.

At the same time, if you attend Macs Golf Outing, Mac personally makes sure every single hole is sponsored. There is a prize on each hole. Including Hawks Tickets. There are raffles for other prizes that have been donated. There is a hit the ball into the water, inside the square for a trip to mexico...(Which either Slap Shot Ed or HPK broke)

Good food (Lunch and Dinner), drink and then you get to play golf.

I do think people see a lack of effort on the part of DB and thus the decline in attendance. While you see the effort Mac puts into his event. You can tell the difference and you want to support rhe guy making the effort.

apples to oranges comparison... comparing a golf outing to a poker outing. if you want to rip on bernstein he gives you plenty of other reasons.... but I would suggest not trying to do so involving the charity for cancer kids he chairs.

As I agree it is two different events it's NOT apples to oranges to how one is MORE invested and takes better care of the participants than the other. I see it as a reflection of the individual and the use of the "pull" they have for the cause.

Two completely different environments. Taking a picture with Jack Daniels girls after a bad beat doesn't really make a whole lot of sense. However, after a double-bogey...perfect sense.

People at poker tournaments are there to win. People at golf outings are there to not be at work.

Won't knock anybody's involvement in charity. I do get a good laugh though when Berns is talking about how they had so many kids they had to upgrade to Conference Point. Being quite familiar with that place, if it's an upgrade where did you take the kids before? The Red Roof Inn off the Edens Spur??

I was well aware of the sensitive subject, my point is with more effort or a more directed effort, more can come of it. Yet, he seems to have no issue with making those same efforts for himself. To be honest they have some heavy hitters involved in the charity and this is their signature event, I would think there is the chance to bring in much more $$ than what they have set up.

It's not really Bernstein's charity. He works with it. I think there are heavier hitters than him on it.

and I did work for this charity before he even knew what it was, so I am not ripping the charity by any means, I just think he could do a much better job than he has done, for the work he has put in, I made my suggestions, and each one could easily work. Never suggested the Jack daniels girls...

Right, One Step has a mid-market i-bank sponsoring the thing while Mac gets a car dealership. I, like bigfan, think there are easy improvements with their signature event. Again, thursday at 6? Bc you get the room for free or cheap?

You'd have many more participants (players and spectators) on a Fri/Sat night. With Bernstein's sports connections and other One Step people's connections they can't arrange a silent auction? Hello, you have spectators who are doing nothing for hours except drinking and watching boring poker!

What are those? That's a big difference between Mac and bernstein. Mac is a bridge builder. bernstein is a bridge burner. How many sports connections can you really have when you are constantly bum-rapping the athletes? bernstein's connections are mainly the billionaire owners for whom he shills. Personally, I don't really want a guy who makes a living calling people retarded on the radio as the front man for my charity.

When someone sponsored North's shows, from the biggest to the smallest sponsor, they became "his guy". He made them feel like friends who he got to know personally. That is why they stayed loyal in the face of flagging ratings. He could also call on them for favors and them on him. Mac learned from North.

Dan learned from Terry, who has no particular care for his company or how it makes his paycheck every two weeks.

Well he's friendly or at least is a mouth peice with the business side execs. Should be easy to ask and get signed jersey, hats, bats, balls, seats, locker rooms passes for charity. If he can get free seats or pre/after game perks for the fam then charity should be a snap! That's easy silent auction money right there! White Sox/Cubs won't have a few prime seats to spare this summer???

To hear Dan tell it, it could be anyone: Uncle Jerry, Theo and Jed, Coach vos Savant...

Maybe Dan shouldn't say those who walk with a goat, also for charity, deserve to die. I have a hard time giving to any charity that Dan Bernstein is pimping. My money goes to St. Jude's every year.

You're right. Bernstein could put a little more effort in it. And he needs to stop being a scum bag when he tries to sell this thing. Turns people off. They'll give their money elsewhere. You make a great point about Berntein getting Blackhawks tickets for himself and his kids, but doesn't do it for his "Poor cancer kids" or use it as a prize to get more money in an auction. But that's Bernstein.

1. He's got the number one radio show in Chicago for men, plugging this tourney for 2 months and he can't sell 130 seats? Pathetic. People do better fundraising on twitter and Facebook campaigns. They don't have the advantage of having tens of thousands of listeners like Bernstein.

2. I'll bet Bernstein doesn't even donate much to this charity. Maybe nothing. Bet you he doesn't even pay to go to this tourney.

Part of the problem might be that an upscale charity gala in River North might not jibe with the Score's demographic. With the exception of WSCR's airwaves from 1-6, meatballs have a sixth sense for knowing where they're not wanted.

When I say pathetic, I mean it's pathetic that Bernstein is the front man with such an advantage to sell this thing and can't do it. Make no mistake about it, Dan Bernstein hurts the charity.

He's a scumb bag jack ass. I know it's not about him. It's about the cancer kids. But people willing to give will give else where and not to Bernstein's charity. Like it or not Dan, that's the truth. People hating Bernstein hurts the charity. Plus a lot of people don't trust Bernstein and think he's skimming off the top. They just do.

So, here's my suggestion for Bernstein next year. Get some sweet sounding lady from the charity board to come on daily to promote this thing next year. Bernstein can't sell this thing. It will make a world of difference for the listeners hearing from somebody else to sell it rather than Bernstein. Guarantee you it will sell it out in 2 weeks this way.

He had one girl that works for the charity on in the past. She was a cancer survivor that benefited from this charity. Get her to do what I suggested. Solved.

I win. The charity wins. Cancer loses.

You're welcome, Dan.

1 This is far from an UPSCALE Charity event and 50% of the people that show up, dont even know what the Charity is.
2. In the past the event has been in River North and has drawn more people than they have right now.
3. This year is not in River North and has less seats, should be easier to fill.
4. Your Meatball Sixth Sense theory, while funny is foolish.

As I stated, I have supported the charity for a number of years now in many different ways, I do know, if this was my signature event, I would put much more effort into my event and if you have been to MAc's event, you see the work he puts into it....and he basically does it himself
