I will allow this thread, but you will need to drop your man cards in the beer keg at the door and pick them up on the way out

This years patronizing award goes to giving the Somali Pirate guy a nomination. This is similar to that fat broad a few years back. No dues paid, just a couple of shmoes picked up off the street for their unique "look".

Not unlike the axiom cited when someone says "nobody is talking about ...", generally "who the fuck cares" means a great number of people do, in fact, care about the subject in question. Having pointed that out, allow me to state that I care relatively little ... and have seen 0% of the following movies nominated for best 'pitcher'*:

    American Hustle
    Captain Phillips
    Dallas Buyers Club
    Gravity
    Her
    Nebraska
    Philomena
    12 Years a Slave
    The Wolf of Wall Street

I saw Gravity & thought it was "meh" at best. I guess Robert Downey Jr.'s portrayal of Tony Stark is not as good as the Somali Pirate guy.

Downey has put the SuperHero genre in the stratosphere, but no one would dare give him shit. He even made a crack about it on the Oscars last year.

I've seen -

Gravity
Her
The Wolf

I enjoyed The Lego Movie, Frozen, and Despicable Me 2 more than all of them.

Which of course means that since you likely didn't see many of the movies therefore nobody anywhere cares about it.

I'm just saying "who cares" is generally a poor choice to open with (for example, if someone were to say "who cares what chas says", I think the clear answer is most people even though most would step all over themselves to 'prove' it false). "I don't care" is more a more likely (and thus possibly more honest) assessment.

it'd be nice if major distributors would pick up oscar bait indie films sooner so that people would have a chance to form their own opinion on a lot of these movies before they're being told how great they are. i think that's where the oscars have been for the past 15 years. it's a shame because films like "her" and "american hustle" are very good pictures, very well written and directed--but by the time you've heard of them, they're already being labeled "classic" and that naturally bugs the shit out of people because we don't like to be told what to think. unless we're russian.

Back to the movies themselves .... as much as anything I found it very off-putting by all the "you have to see this very important movie" treatment a number of these seemed to get .... which one can say isn't necessarily the movies' faults .... except a lot of it actually is even if it's not identified up front as marketing and award-jockeying.

Not that it probably matters, but the only one I would think one would need to see in a theater to appreciate it would seem to be 'Gravity' ... otherwise, as BF intimated, there's nothing compelling enough to expend the time, money, and energy in going to see these outside of your home.

Z - which one would you recommend to dullards like me if I were only going to see one and why?

Dallas Buyers Club is the only Best Pic nominee I have any interest in seeing.

it's the marketing, it's not the filmmakers. filmmakers are just trying to make films.

seriously...go see "robocop". the best picture films are great but they're not mass appeal films. i mean, do you wanna see a black guy get the passion of the christ treatment for 2 hours? knock yourself out with "12 years a slave". do you want an existential and visual gymnastic sci-fi yarn? "gravity". do you want to be reminded how lonely you are? "her".

"american hustle" would be the most accessible out of all of them, and i believe the film's going to sweep. it's the least "important" of them all...

Most years I will watch this show. However, Ellen is too much of a phony softball. Just can't stand her. Seems like a big fake who is a bitch to people behind the scenes. With her as a host I'm certain the humor will be bland and the jokes will be safe. She's so perfectly tame. Hey and pick a gender why don't you? She's like some kind of a futuristic test human, with mixtures of man and woman. It's freaky. She isn't even dressing like a dyke. She's looks like a nerd going to prom whenever I see her on television in those outfits.

Golden Globes > Oscars, both as a show & as an award. The Globes try to cover all fields when picking their winners, while the Oscars seem formulaic. Every film fills an Oscars trope.

12 Years A Slave- "Inspirational"
Dallas Buyers Club- "Guy gets aids, guy dies of aids"
Nebraska & Her- "off-beat indies"
American Hustle & Wolf of Wall Street- "who's who of Hollywood"
Captain Phillips- "Self righteous Tom Hanks"
Gravity- "Self righteous George Clooney"
Philomena- "Historical Melodrama"

It doesn't mean anything here, but I cannot express - even in 'n' words for Terry Bradshaw's sake - how happy I am that you made that exact comparison.

Back to my "point" ... I recall being interested in Am Hustle for awhile before it even came out but by the time it came out and I had the means to go see it, I had been burned out by the over-exposure to how great this movie was as though it had re-invented the industry, and then more and more I became attuned to the opposite side of the coin (well, it's really rather pedantic and pedestrian, etc.) and finally avoided the whole thing like the plague.

And I'll try to get around to Robocop since it received your blessing as well! :D

Zizou --- I have no idea how you get that vibe from Ellen, but each to their own ... though I find the "phony softball" charge to be particularly odd given the event in question ... I mean, they're not going to resurrect Bill Hicks to host it so I have no idea what in the hell you would expect in reality.

yeah. i mean that's the thing...is that i saw "american hustle" before the explosion of accolades so i just appreciated it for what it was. i'd give it a few years when people have forgotten about it. it is a solid film. i really enjoyed it.

i honestly think "robocop" is going to go unnoticed because it came out at such a shitty time (feb is a horrible month for new releases) but it is legit. it could've been better, it's not as sharp as the original was...but as i said in the thread, it's not the same movie. it's going for something different. but it's still damn entertaining.
