Great series on the History channel about some of the most powerful men throughout US history. Carnegie, Rockefeller, Morgan, and Ford just to name a few (of course none of them earned their wealth :P ) I've seen it before, but it's on again this weekend. Interesting shit if you like history.

Can you imagine the crap some of these great men would have taken in the current climate/technology communication age?

Great program, was watching it today on H2. I really liked the cuts and thoughts from modern day business men, as well.

Hopefully none of them have their kids run over.

They weren't all great men. Some of them were downright scum bags, as is evidenced in the show.

Nope. Harriman, Morgan, and Rockefeller have already driven over them. No one can earn a million dollars honestly.

So what's the OFFICIAL "How Much a Person Can Make Honestly" threshold? $50,000? $5.00? .50 cents?

Of course they can.

I would see your point if you had said $100 million or $1 billion.

It's a quote from William Jennings Bryan. I don't mind if you adjust for inflation.

Why do you hate people with more money than you?

How bout judging a man based on the contents of their character and not the color of their credit card?

I can't answer for JORR, but I can tell you that even though I don't hate people with more money, I will be quick to point out the absurdity of any rich person who thinks they are harder-working or smarter than anyone else simply because they became rich (or were born rich). That was the argument in the Sam Zell thread.

Now, back to the show... How about that steel company!?

Believe me, I'm not trolling. I think for many men of my age there is a struggle between an attraction to and a revulsion for American capitalism. Hell, there is an entire genre of fiction to devoted to such a concept.

Any mention of Henry Ford's blatant/disgusting/ignorant antisemitism?

OK fair enough. To be honest I do not feel I have made my family high enough to be able to tell others how much is too much.

So money is like driving on the highway.
To paraphrase a Carlin bit... "you ever notice that anyone going faster that you on the highway is AN IDIOT! and everyone going slower than you is a MORON!"

Actually this is a good point. When I asked my first question I wondered. Should we now judge these guys by today's standards as they "built" this country? I am certain these fathers of America would never stand up to todays standards and maybe they couldn't get rich without say discrimination?
