Russia is demanding that Ukraine withdraw from the Crimea in about ten hours.

Yup, and they won't stop with the Ukraine. They pretty much believe any land that has ever been "Russian" is still for them to get back. You'd think with all the United Nations rhetoric about Palestine that they'd be more involved in stopping actual nations from being destroyed.

Russia attacked Ukraine because they saw an opening with the unrest and were pissed that their puppet President had been thrown out. Not cause of Obama.

Serisoulsy. Let's not Chas up this thread again.

Yep.

Russia doesn't react out of fear. They react to physical beating. It wouldn't matter who was in office, they would have invaded and will continue to move until punched. This is who they are and pretty much have been since their tribe started to consolidated power

Russia better do something quick since their stock market is tanking and the banks are reacting badly. Gazprom, one of their biggest companies lost 1/6 of its value.

It was a major topic of conversation at Pulaski Day events this morning. No one who has been through this before believes for a second that they simply stop of their own accord at Ukraine.

They aren't backing out of the eastern half of Ukraine now regardless of circumstances. I'm not sure those self loathing eastern Ukrainians want them out. Imagine throwing off the yoke of a half a century of brutal Russian domination only to welcome them back a couple of decades later. Some of these former communist bloc countries simply fear freedom.

Putin has said in the past that he never considered Ukraine a real country.

Pretty much. Russia considers Ukraine a part of Russia since the 800s. Fuck them to hell.

Great thread

And I dont mean to be a dick and bring this up but THIS is the kind of thread you could never find at the other place.

Yes, there are mean spirited debates here, but there's a flip side to that coin, and its threads like this.

Well done to each and every one of you (cept CPguy and Chas.)

I don't get it either. Most of these people have relatives who can tell you the horrors caused by Russians. The fact that they have any support whatsoever is amazing.

Hopefully these two things put Russia back in it's place.
1) Massive economic issues for Europe if the Baltics start to fall. The Ukraine may be divided, but Europe pretty much can't afford anything else to happen.
2) In terms of actual war, the United States and China won't ever be on opposite sides unless it's a direct conflict between our two nations. So, China either sits out completely, or supports the United States and Europe. Either one, basically puts Russia against the world.

I wonder if the situation would have been any different had the US moved missles into Poland as it had originally planned to do

When you have the Ukrainians without shit for brains escaping to Western Europe, US, Canada and Brazil you're left with people who are blind.

In regards to Canada being out front ... apparently after Ukraine itself and Russia, the highest Ukranian population in the world can be found up in America's hat ... don't know that it's entirely causal, but it surely is not entirely coincidental.

Yeah, Manitoba and Saskatchewan have huge Ukrainian populations. I think half the names in a Winnipeg phonebook end in "-chuk."

That's where you'll find initial wave of Ukrainian immigrants to North America. Makes sense given the geography and economy of those two provinces and Ukraine. Biggest North American Ukrainian festival is in Dauphin, Manitoba or Toronto. I've been to the Toronto one the past 3 years and it's very fun.

part of the allure of Ukraine is the bountiful farming it provides

Russia wants to make itself self sufficient

If this guy is to be believed, this is more Russian desperation than anything and will cause serious harm to Russia with or without a war.

From one vast windswept prairie of wheat to another. Kind of like how Norwegians and Swedes settled Minnesota.

Sounds about right

What could Russia net gain in this situation?

Well, it's a pretty barren place, but so is the rest of Russia. It's filled with Muslims who hate the Russians a lot, Ukranians who hate the Russians but not as much as the Muslims, and Russians who are considered the "Floridians" of Russia.

So, basically, easier access to Russian Tampa Bay. Maybe they can get an expansion hockey team there.

In California you'll find western Ukrainian immigrants who worked on fruit orchards. In fact, quite a few almond farmers are of Ukrainian heritage. One of my grandfathers worked on a fruit orchard in Ukraine but when he got to the US decided on setting up shop in Cleveland.

No, I know that, but that seems shortsighted as Spanky's beer choices.
