I don't think Dan Bernstein would like the use of "we" and "us" in this thread...

No.

Russia has another Black Sea port in Novorossiysk. It's not quite as desirable but it would do the job if necessary.

That said .... they want to create a number of pro-Russian "banana republics" along their borders. It's a threat to the people of Ukraine and other Eastern European countries that Russia is not going to tolerate anti-Russian interests "infiltrating" its neighboring countries. Crimea's independence here would be a significant victory because it's a piece of pro-Russian territory on Russia's borders (never mind the propaganda windfall it would provide). This is not unlike what happened with South Ossetia and Abkhazian in 2008 ... which is why Latvia, Lithuania, and good-dolphin-land spent a dime to call NATO to say 'help, please and thank you' because they don't feel like being re-inserted back into the Russian matrix.

The end goal of this is to prevent (or at least slow down) the expansion of US/NATO military bases near the Russian border. After all, that's why they got all pissy about the Czech and Polish missile defense complexes that the US wanted to build practically on Moscow's front lawn. Thus my deferential titular nod to the Cold War ... like Sammy Cahn wrote, "I've Heard That Song Before."

I believe I should point out that Kruschev (himself half Ukranian) 'gifted' that area to Ukraine. This was not the most popular thing he ever did but, in short, who the fuck was gonna say 'boo' to him about it? So any given Russian likely considers Crimea as much a part of Russia as anywhere else, they're just Indian giving what's rightfully theirs anyway.

The article I posted said the "gift" part is somewhat a myth. Russia didn't really have the capability to support it in its weakened state and the geography of it. Basically, the water and electricity and most other stuff have to come from the Ukraine anyways. Logically, even the Russians knew it didn't really make sense to have it and the ownership period of it was relatively small in the grand scheme of things anyways.

It was as much abandoned or unwanted until Putin decided it was time to be a big guy against another country that Russia has repeatedly harassed.

Thus "gift" in quotation marks. But you are correct.

Serisoulsy. Let's not Chas up this thread again.

Do you believe that if there were a stronger president in the white house, not Mitt or that goofy broad who I don't even want to name, but a real strongman type of either party, that Putin would have taken the 90 minute call more seriously?

We should use this opportunity to press our old claim on British Columbia, we need to connect the lower 48 to Alaska.

I don't think Putin took Gerogie any more seriously than we did.

Sure, but the same people that claim Obama is a giant pussy, usually refer to W as a tough guy.

The funniest part about Arizona hating Mexicans so much, is that Arizona used to be Mexico.

I don't think people take seriously enough the things that happen in our world. Russia wants a come back as they saw our will was weak after all the mideast shit. And China is just sitting there waiting.

It would be virtually impossible for China to get into a conflict with us and Europe on the other side. It would probably take them 50 years to recover whether they won or lost.

Russia really is on an island on their own here.

I think it would take the President to be absolutely bat spit crazy before Putin would care what he / she thinks. He's a throwback to the old Soviets. He's gonna do as he pleases until the entire wold joins together and slaps him backwards.

Again, this is about world politics. Not Obama. They saw an opening and took it. Syria had no bearing on the timing of this at all.

Not sure how I'm supposed to feel about this whole Ukraine thing. My family is from there, but the more and more I hear about the place the more and more i realize why all the jews are leaving. Its one of the most anti semetic places in the world as far as non muslim places.

So is that anti semetism to be blamed on the government, the new government or the people..or all of them? Basically it sounds like everyone there hates jews so if that's the case I hope Russia burns it to the ground.

My point is not that they will start a war. Just that Russia and China will have to be focused on.

We are a large and one time influential player on the world stage. We are not the Fiji Islands.

If it's about politics pure and simple, then our actions or lack thereof have some bearing on what Putin decided to do.

Our society is far from perfect. Having said that, the amount of cultures living in relative harmony hear is like no other place in the world.

No one pays much attention but there are parallels. Putin is president then term limited becomes Prime Minister then President again. It isn't nothing that this guy is running stuff.

Ukraine had some serious racism problems with soccer a year or two ago. Wasn't it Ukraine where the soccer executive said he didn't want any "zumba-bumbas" on his team?

The Euro 2012 was co-hosted by Poland and Ukraine and that cast a pretty big spotlight on the racism in the Ukraine. CSKA Moscow is kinda the flag bearer for racist fans, but yeah, there's a ton of clubs in the same boat. And guess what? The 2018 World Cup is in Russia, that should be fun.

That seems to be the prevalent point of view among the chattering/clattering classes:

Quote:
Obama’s weakness emboldens Putin
When President Obama declared Friday that “there will be costs” for any Russian intervention in Ukraine, you could hear the laughter emanating from the Kremlin — followed by the sound of Russian military vehicles roaring into Crimea and seizing control of the peninsula.

“Costs?” Vladimir Putin must have thought. Just like the “costs” Obama imposed on the Assad regime in Syria?

Just last year none other than Putin helped Obama get out of his pledge to impose costs on Bashar al-Assad’s government for crossing his “red line” and using chemical weapons on its people.

In August 2012, Obama issued a similar warning to Syrian officials, warning that Assad would face consequences if “we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized.” Assad responded by moving and using his chemical weapons — not once but 14 times beginning in December 2012, just four months after Obama declared his red line.

Obama did nothing.

Then Obama began backing away from his declaration, saying, “I didn’t set a red line. The world set a red line.” But when he went to the world and asked them to join him in enforcing “their” red line, the British Parliament voted no and NATO declined to help. Soon, the administration was lowering expectations. A U.S. official was telling the Los Angeles Times that any U.S. strike would be “just muscular enough not to get mocked.” Secretary of State John Kerry declared that any strike would be “unbelievably small” and would not really constitute “war.” Then Obama decided he needed to go to Congress and get approval for his “unbelievably small” strike. And when it became clear that he did have the votes, in stepped Putin to rescue Obama from an embarrassing defeat by offering a deal to have Syria disarm.

Obama jumped on the Russian-engineered face-saving way out. As soon as the deal was announced, Syrian officials promptly declared it “a victory for Syria, achieved thanks to our Russian friends.” To rub salt in the wound, Putin lectured the president in a New York Times op-ed about the dangers of American exceptionalism.

It was one of the most embarrassing and emasculating episodes in the history of U.S. foreign policy.

In the wake of this debacle, Obama is now warning Putin — the man who saved him from his promise to impose costs on Assad — that he’s going to impose costs on Putin for his intervention in Ukraine? Did he really expect Putin to take him seriously?

Yup, Ukrainians were and still are pretty antisemitic. Though, Russia is as bad if not worse. So, you should probably sit out on offering commentary.
