Don't some schools only require taking the ACT?

It was a political thread to begin with. This was the original political section. Remember politics didn't matter on this board until late 2007.

I guess that trumps my 4 touchdowns in a high school game.

What does being born into money have to do with "God given talents"?

And on the 8th day, God created nepotism

Although I guess God would be the ultimate nepotism abuser

I think God just wanted those families to be rich. The lord works in mysterious ways.

It probably didn't get much of a response, because his answer was expected by everyone.

No, the exact point is that they have more educational opportunities, and they work harder because of them. You can't buy brains. You can only buy things that allow you to put in the work in to get those.

I have used this example before, but there was a kid in our high school who had parents who owned the local 9 hole golf club and driving range. He was on the golf team and pretty good because he was born into a situation where he could take advantage. He put in significantly more work though to get to that point. The fact that his parents owned a driving range put himself in a position to work harder at golf than me. Is it fair? I don't know. I look at it that I am playing the hand that I was dealt. I know for a fact that this guy worked harder at golf than me.

Anyone can cut & paste & leave out other pertinent comments. This subject isn't A or B, or either or.
But as I said earlier, I'm not having this debate again. The board doesn't need it.

No. I just stole Al Bundy's dream. I did hit 3 homeruns in a high school game (I legged out all of them) but it was against Corliss so I can't really brag about it.

Was kind of my point, we all have talents. You have to use what you got. Of course, the wealthy are going to give their kids advantages. But Eminem can sing, and I can't. It doesn't matter how much my parent spend on singing lessons, it wasn't meant to be.

Scorehead - by definition, admitting that rich kids have an advantage admits that wealth is not accumulated on a level playing field. There is no amount of additional context that could change your position. Everyone is free to go read your post. You completely contradicted yourself in the exact same post. It would be easier if you'd just admit that it's not a level playing field. No one is even saying it should be a level playing field. We are just acknowledging that it's not.

It ISN'T a level playing field. Everyone isn't created equal. I'm not sure what we are arguing. I agree with everything you said here.

I'm pretty sure ACT is multiple choice. You don't need to take a course before taking the test. All you need to do is to the library and get a book to prep for it. If you have a library card and you can read you can prep for the test.

A more interesting analysis would be the correlation of SAT score to future income

I would probably consider size to be a talent. It's something you're born with that gives an athletic advantage, depending on the sport.
