Things get beat up and overblown all the time. Boston Strong is one. The Cardinal Way is probably one. Personally, I have dorky relatives who live all over Illinois and are always making cheesy jokes about the Cubs or Cardinals or Illinois, and half of them aren't even familiar with the teams. It's just an unfortunate byproduct of sports.

However, let's not forget Bernstein's central theme and reason for interviewing this guy: sports are a sterile, calculated way for wang-whippers to destroy each other for our amusement... but not enough amusement that we should ever take pride in our teams or feel a connection with our teams or care about anything but winning championships. And once the championship is won, don't cheer. Sit in quiet reflection to determine what it means to your life.

I brought up the hypocrisy of "Boston Strong" while in Boston last August to a girl who had lived there for all of five months. She's originally from the northern Chicago 'burbs. Thought she was going to murder me on the spot for questioning all things "Boston Strong."

Boston has an unusual allegiance to its city. I think it's the way they talk. The accent only exists in Boston. Once you cross the city line, nobody talks like that.

These potholes are insane.

It's basically just Boston and Rhode Island... the extreme East. I live in the Northern part of Connecticut, right next to the Massachusetts state line, and no one talks like that here unless they grew up in Boston or Rhode Island. And there's no in-between. Either they have the extreme accent or none at all.

Not sure about that. I worked for a company in New Hampshire & everyone their had as much of an accent as the Bostonians.

Yes, that's true... but the accent doesn't sound the same to me. Every time we go to New Hampshire, I tell my wife they sound like a mix between Canadian and a little bit of Bostonian.

Just last week I ordered potatoes Lyonnaise at the Golden Steer in Las Vegas. The waiter, who happened to be a Chicago guy, started laughing and we bonded immediately. When I got back I was telling my wife the story of how this guy goofed on my pronunciation of "potatoes Lyonnaise". She's fluent in French and she made me repeat "Lyonnaise" several times and told me I was saying it perfectly. I had to explain to her that it was the "puhtaytuhs" part that signified me as a Chicagoan.

I've never really thought about it. I definitely have what would be considered a working class Chicago accent. But it's odd in that neither of my parents had as heavy an accent as I do. It's really just dialect. I wouldn't make many judgments based upon it, though I guess it would be a fair guess that I didn't attend a place like The Choate School. People certainly do jusge you based upon the way you speak though. I doubt many believe I have an English degree.

Why attempt to improve on perfection?

I was still shocked my freshman year of college when someone told me I had a "Chicago accent". We were like two hours away from Chicago and I lived my whole life about half an hour outside Chicago. Then again, they also assumed we hid in our houses at night so we didn't get killed.

both my parents had a moderate Chicago accent. as a kid growing up in Algonquin, other kids made fun of the way I said things....like SASSAGE instead of sausage.

I WISH I could do a real thick Chicago accent. I love it. I think it's kind of dying out though.
