I once spent days drilling the nasalness out of "sorry" and "tomorrow," then I drilled too hard and sounded like a Canadian.

How does one grow up in the suburbs having never mowed a lawn?

Have parents who pay someone else to do it instead of doing it themselves or having their kids do it.

Wait...did Bernstein say he's never mowed a lawn before or that he doesn't know how to use a lawnmower?

I hated mowing the lawn so much I won't make my kids do it. I'll torture them in other ways. I had to do like an acre yard with a push mower and hay fever. what a fucking nightmare.

The director and narrator for Chicagoland were on WGN news this morning. Mark Konkol, formerly of the Sun-Times, now with old man Ricketts dnainfo.com, provides narration for the CNN series. Robin B said she liked his thick Chicago accent but Konkol's accent doesn't necessarily ring true Chicago to me. Konkol's the voice that isn't Garry McCarthy:

Both. I understand that some people have a service, but it is kind of a rite of passage for teenage boys...take of your shirt and mow the neighbor's lawn.

For being such a moral, educated progressive, Danny boy sure is sheltered. First he says people should just move out of ghettos. Now he reveals he's never mowed a lawn. I would be embarrassed to reveal the latter.

I'm surprised Dan can get away with complimenting Dominique on "how well-spoken" he is.

He said that!? That's a big no - no for the PC police. ESPN took some heat for it a couple decades ago. #codewords

How many black people did he insinuate were stupid today? I heard at least two and I only listened to like 15 minutes of the show!

You guys are being too harsh on Danny. I'm sure one day he will evolve and realize it's also not right to make fun of black people.

That's par for the course concerning BernSTINE's views on "wang whippers" and their place in this world.

It's ok. That was balanced out by his hard hitting stuff on the inequality in pothole repair based on race.

yeah i didnt know the BeerStain family was one who was bourgeois-plus enough to always have hired help for lawncare/maintenance. you'd think dan had enough to a prototypical middle class upbringing to not treat lawnmowers like a foreign object (i'm reminded of seth meyers' story about not being able to fix a flat tire for some reason) but c'est la vie they were well enough off / above it all enough to be GOOD. MONIED. PEOPLE. who didn't give the lawn a personalized WANGWHIPPING, as that was clearly "the help"s job and dan knew to stay back and let those WELL. PAID. PEOPLE. do their thing.

still though, it's funny to see how "the voice of the fan" ended up to become "the mouthpiece of the establishment" as dan has done a quite frankly (without stephen a smith) amazing job of ushering in an age of transition from populist sports talk to 500% corporate #synergy seething VOICE. OF. THE. TEAMS. THAT. PAY. US. TO. BE. THEIR. MOUTHPIECE.

and of course, don't be one of those assholes who shows up at the door of the poker tournament trying to get in too late. they dont want to turn down your $300 and only charge you $75 to watch (....????? jesus man i know its a charity but $75 to watch? how many of these GOOD. MONIED. PHILANTHROPISTS. are bringing +1 or +2 at the cost of 75-150 on top of their 300 to play just so they can watch? the only thing better than philanthropy is ostentatious philanthropy so you can show everyone how much better you are than "all the rest"... and "high rollers" please tell us if you dont want to trample everybody because if ur dumb enough to point out that you're good at poker they'll put you at the special high difficulty table where you're way less likely to win the prize that is supposedly one of the motivating factors to enter this)

ah well, it ain't 1992 anymore.... that's for damn sure. ask whitney houston.

I don't know how long it's been the case, but Dan's dad is a big fucking deal at Sidley Austin. It seems a little more modest now, but late '70s Deerfield was probably a place where you could live a life without mowing your own lawn. My dad and his sisters grew up in Northbrook about ten years earlier and none of them know how to cook food, so maybe there's something to that sort of entitled incompetence.

Even though I have a high level lawyer in my family. Specializes in real estate deals and has money coming out of his ass. His two kids will have the generational wealth that Jorr despises. He made them do summer jobs and cut grass and so on because that is where he came from. It is just a thing you have or you don't. He was Greek though not really smart.

I realize it's a completely different world than most of us live in, but I have to believe (and hope) that even if I was filthy rich, I'd still make my kid mow the lawn. But even if I didn't, I'd say "son, never, ever, ever admit you've never mowed a lawn. And ABSOLUTELY don't say it on the radio."

Well, if Dan spent all his summers at the almighty CAMP, that's a lot of prime lawn-mowin' time he missed out on.

I don't suppose they were filthy rich growing up. I don't think that kind of income gap existed yet. Still probably made more than enough to hire a lawn service, though.

I imagine as Dan wants to be fashionable in the city his lot isn't all that large. Wouldn't the fashionable prudent thing for him to do is have an old school true value non motorized mower and be pushing that thing with his boy?

While I mowed my lawn plenty of times, and never had a service to do it, hiring landscapers isn't really an upper class thing. There were plenty of trucks driving around my neighborhood.
